Receivers- Take Superior off your list also. It was the only one I have used that i would not use again.
Cost to build - You don't save any money, unless you really haunt the classifieds, learn how to spot a bargain, and jump on it immediately. Takes a lot of work and time. right now you should be able to build a complete lower for $200, and buy an upper for $475.
All new parts, no tax or shipping included. I bet you could find a new complete gun for about the same money.
But where's the fun in that??
AR's are model kits for grown-ups. I've built more of them than have ever made it to the range.
Any AR experts here?

Re: Any AR experts here?
My local gun pusher has Stag Arms receivers for $129, DPMS internals kit for $79, and away I spoke for two!
Now to start recharging the toy account for an upper, a batch of once fired brass, dies, bullets, primers,

No damage control is ever as good as prevention.

Re: Any AR experts here?
AndyC - thanks for the info!
CDH - when I put together mine, I got the kit from http://jtdistributing.net/store/kits_all.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which is a branch of Doublestar. They are not the only source (by far not the only source!) but I am very happy with the quality of their assembled upper and the rest of the parts. All you need is a stripped lower. When I ordered mine, there was an option to substitute a Jewell trigger for the stock one, which I did (am used to it - not that it is "the best", just what is in my other AR). In any case, the lower receiver innards are in the kit. If you buy just an upper, then you need to separately buy the lower parts and a stock.
Regards,
Andrew

This link:
So you want to buy an AR-15, huh?
taught me more about AR style rifles than any other single source I have read (and admittedly I was very ignorant about them). It is focused on buy, versus building, an AR, but it covered a lot of manufacturers, terms, and why/wherefores that I saw referenced in many posts, but didn't have the background to understand. It might be of use to you.
In the end, I bought an AK instead of an AR...
But to each his own.
