This is the correct answer. Federal law requires 21+ to purchase handgun ammo. You may or may not be asked for ID, just like with alcohol.
Im pretty sure all the Academy's have the same question pop up on their screen. Probably all major chains do.
I sometimes get "are you over 21?" with a big grin from the cashier. I say " yep, as of yesterday". (im over 50)

All of that makes perfect sense. Maybe they have to ask the question to meet legal requirements.

I think I've been asked once out of all the times that I've bought ammo. Slightly more often for beer. Although I've also gotten ID'd for an R-rated movie in San Antonio when I shaved. :grumble
