Deaf people know better than to advance on strangers.

Besides, the mugger had a two-way oral conversation with the victim.

Be careful how you present this senario to you wives, girlfriends, moms etc etc...

I tried a very simplified version of this, set it up, gave simple specifics about the "potential" threat, and gave three clear options...No deviations...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You see a larger than average "male" aggressively approaching you from about 50 feet away, you are in a lit parking lot coming out of the Sam's Club (after the door checkers checked your reciept, yeah I embellished this part from another discussion  ) You are pushing a cart and have your firearm holstered in your favorite spot...

The man is closing rather quickly and has made no deviation from his closing in on you, distance is now 25 feet, he's looking right at you...You reasonably determine this to be a threat of unknown potential or intent by this person...

(Your options are)

a. Scream STOP at this point, keep the cart between you and the threat, start backing away, and cover your weapon, no draw at this point...

b. implement "a" and draw your weapon, do not fire...

c. implement "a" "b" and fire to stop the threat...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I only presented the three options and didn't specify the reaction of the threat to those three reactions...

Of course "c" would result in obvious reaction of that threat...And that being the last option anyway...

The other two "a" "b", the threat stops, and either runs away at the sight of a gun, or raises hands and says "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to scare you...There was a car behind you that looked like they didn't see you and I thought you were about to be hit..."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We talked about unexpected variables in this and couldn't come up with a simple answer to this...

I believe it ends up being a situation where you'd better have your head on a swivle, be ready to react appropriately, and better assess any threats within 50 feet of you 360 degrees around you...

There is a majority of good people out there, but the bottom line is no one should ever assume anything...

Playing it cool, tends to keep you from getting into trouble...Just don't look "too much" like your trying to play it cool... ;-)

This goes for the males as well...

There's also a lot of ways to go on this, and talking it out, working certain generic responses, and plans seem to work out best...It requires a custom fit to anyones personal levels of comfort...There is no one clear fix for this...But the solution we carry is final, and its a responsibility we need to accept as well as be prepared to be accountable for that as well...

Fort Worth Police Seek Robber
Todd L. Davis

POSTED: 4:55 pm CDT July 20, 2007
UPDATED: 5:30 pm CDT July 20, 2007

FORT WORTH -- Fort Worth police said they are searching for at least one man they suspect of attacking women outside a grocery store.

Daphna Burns, 81, was carrying groceries to her car at the Sack & Save grocery store in the 3400 block of Alta Mesa Boulevard on July 6 when a man took her purse, knocked her teeth out and dragged her through the parking lot, according to police.

“He hurt my left arm, and my wrist, and my knee and my two front teeth, she said.

Police said they think the same person was responsible for the robbing of a 35-year-old woman in front of her four children at about 10:30 a.m. on July 17 at Sam’s Warehouse in the 2400 block of Southeast Loop 820. The culprit asked the victim for directions and then wrestled her to the ground and took her purse, according to police.

Witnesses described the culprit as a black man, about 6 feet 3 inches tall, about 30 years old with a medium to thin build. Police said a second person was in a car with the man.

Police said they think the man is responsible for as many as four robberies. The victims were all women.

Police asked that anyone with information about these incidents call 817-392-4370 or 817-469-TIPS.

Does anyone else see how this assault breaks down some cliche's. Like " I wouldn't let someone that close to me", "I'd just run away", and " I'd know if it was a BG. I see how these options are not very valid for a lot of people.

Right on, Jim.

Most good people will comply with a request to stop. That way you can control/test their intent before they get close enough to knock your teeth out.

How about using some body language with the verbal? Maybe start with a request to "hold up there for me". Some people may take your order as a challenge. Did you talk about any movement? Scanning for the 2nd BG?

Yes, it's a very dynamic issue. This is something that makes the ECQC class so good, the role players work the drills.
Evaluating possible threats within 50 ft., requires some good awareness.

You are on the right path. One thing is to not get emotionally engaged with an unknown contact.

The BG is assessing to see if he chooses you. We need a way to assess unknowns and their intent, as soon as possible, before it becomes a deadly force issue.
