Re: Talk me out of selling my Gen 3 21sf...
On the gen4 issues: I'm not denying there were issues.
My G19 is a gen 4 that came with the newer extractor.
It has fed and extracted everything flawlessly. Fmj, jhp, 115 gr to 147 gr, brass and steel cased.
I'm over ~1000 rounds in at this point. I've has 2, maybe 3 cases hit me on the top of my head, haven't noticed any other erratic extraction or anything.
Then again, I've had taurus guns run flawlessly, 1911s etc so maybe I'm just lucky.

Thank your for this post. Now that I think back of watching the G21 torture tests and how much I really trust that gun on my night stand with a TLR-1 I would probably regret getting rid of it. I think I'll try and find another way to acquire a 17.gigag04 wrote:The G3 G21SF is in my opinion the most reliable, simplest functioning, most forgiving 45 made today. When our dept switched to issuing it 3 years ago, qualification scores went up remarkably.
Moving from a full size to a glock to a full size glock is not really a gun change, it is a caliber change. The perceived recoil on the G21SF is much less violent than almost any other pistol in that offering. It is a proven model with lots of LE buy in and high round count stories, the g4 models are getting there, but still kind of protype-ish in my mind based.
And if I may, allow to frame these comments in the light of me never really being a Glock "guy" per se. I've always liked 1911s much better, but I have been converted largely due to hours of training and thousands of rounds through this gun.
I find it is much better balanced with a light.
I too want a G17, but I want it for shooting competitions.
As far as extractor issues go my 19 is a gen 3 With a test fire date of 05/06/11. I purchased I Brand new from Academy and the only issue I had had out of it was a magazine issue with a cheap 33 rounder. I would guess on 2k rounds through it by now. I love that gun for sure. My girlfriend likes I also and is ready to permanently "borrow" it.
* On a side note, maybe Ill sell some of my benchmades

So I guess I will make it really ez for you. GO BUY A RELOADING SETUP. You can find them cheap and dont need a lot money to get started. Check this stuff out.

I have used this stuff for a few years, and I use the loads in competition. They cost me around $0.08 per round, this adds up to $4-$5 a box of 50.

I can appreciate instant gratification but I'd recommend holding onto the G21 unless you're convinced you don't want it anymore. The fact you wrote this thread tells me you're not convinced yet.

Thanks. That Lee setup actually looks like the one my dad has. Its been put up in a cabinet. he used to roll his own for Deer season but he got out of it for some reason.Richardc wrote:http://www.friendswoodbullet.com/
Also in response to the lead bullets? Ive read you shouldn't shoot lead out of Glocks. Any merit to this? How much more should I expect to pay for jacketed?

Jacketed run a bit more but still can be cheap to run in your gun. I have never heard that about glock, but you can always make a few and see how they work. Thats the beautiful thing about reloading, you can change you recipe as needed.

Well thank you. Going to start spending some time in the reloading section and slowly start gathering materials.Richardc wrote:Jacketed run a bit more but still can be cheap to run in your gun. One last question. One of the links is to a company selling lead bullets in friendswood. Do you live nearby? I was looking at primer prices and it was $30 something for 1000 and then a $30 hazmat for shipping. If you are near friends wood where can I find these local to avoid hazmat costs?

Re: Talk me out of selling my Gen 3 21sf...
YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO RUN LEAD THROUGH GLOCKS.
Supposedly it is bad for the rifling, but I don't know for sure. I have a couple of buddies (fellow forum members) who actually did a fairly scientific test to see what damage was done. I'm not real sure what the exact results were, but if I remember correctly as long as you aren't running massive amounts of lead through without cleaning, you are ok. I would suggest running a bore snake through the barrel every 150 rounds if you are going to shoot lead.
YMMV, Dont Try This At Home, Don't Tell Glock You Did, etc.

If you dont clean out all copper fowling you can, not will, lead your barrel. Its not a Glock thing, it a gun thing. If you own a gun that is damaged by lead I would get rid of it. Lead is softer than steal, I dont see how you can damage unless you lead fowl it and keep shooting, but then that would be your fault.

Re: Talk me out of selling my Gen 3 21sf...
Most if not all polygonal barrel manufacturers say to not use lead in their barrels. Glock is no exception to this. Googling Glock Kaboom will give you plenty of hits and horror stories. There are also people that have said they haven't had a problem. It's not something I'd chance and wouldn't use lead without having an aftermarket barrel that does not have polygonal rifling.

Re: Talk me out of selling my Gen 3 21sf...
You cant use lead in Glock or any other polygonal rifled barrel because the lead will build up in the grooves and cause an increase in pressure that can cause the Kaboom. For me it's a non issue. When I get into reloading I don't plan on reloading. If you want to reload with lead you can buy a replacement barrel from Lone Wolf that has traditional rifling that will allow you to shoot lead.
Sent to you from Galt's Gulch.

I have shot lead out of Glock, H&K, and many other polygonal rifled barrels. If you clean the copper out of the barrel you will have no problems.
