i thought it was illegal to carry a fixed blade knife in Houston or Texas in general, I know for a fact that any double edge blade is illegal, so help me understand, and as far as being sturdy I carry a spydero lock blade its called the c10. its all stainless and serrated

I don't particularly have anything against carrying a fixed blade knife.......it's just not convenient for me personally as an EDC.

I own this knife: http://www.gerbergear.com/Tactical/Kniv ... e_22-01626. It comes with a drop-leg sheath which can be converted to MOLLE attachement, and includes a sharpening stone in the sheath. But, it is way too big for an EDC. My EDC is a CRKT M21-14SFG folder.

Indeed. And as I posted before, I don't wear the "baby K-Bar" my wife bought me a couple of years ago because I read that the shape can be construed to resemble said little b, bowie knives. Yep, darned irritating. :grumble

...San Antonio's got some "different" laws than just the state regs...I'd hunt them up and study them, they seem aggressive in enforcement...don't know if Houston has any in addition to state law...I carry a fixed blade as a "work" knife...less than 4" in a spear point design...no problem...it's shaped like this one: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt ... It helps a ton thanks. I was just worried that some could consider any fixed blade knife as a dagger, or is a dagger a double edge fixed blade? :headscratch

...the law's ambiguous..."...including but not limited to..." doesn't tell us a lot...but I've been told since I got here in 84 that a two-edged blade is considered a dagger...

Yeah, one of the things that has me nervous about carrying knives in Texas is I really don't have a good understanding of the definitions. The blade length part is easy. But I am not sure how to distinguish a daggers and Bowie knives.

IANAL, but I have come to the conclusion that a dagger does connotate having a double-edge to it and is intended for STABBING instead of CUTTING. Not saying that a dagger won't cut or another type of knife won't stab...just about the INTENT of the design. At one point (no pun) I had intentions of living in San Antonio after I got out of military service since I grew up in South Texas, there is a significant USAF presence there, and a lot of aircraft work. But the more I read about the way they do business, the more I like good old Fort Worth just fine.

I posted above a bit about daggers. However, with bowie knives, it seems the intent remains the same. The vast majority of bowie designs feature a sharpened clip point. This increases their ability for stabbing. Looking at the statue with that in mind (and yes, I know a sharp assistant district attorney can make it sound how they want it to sound) it would seem that carrying a knife intended for stabbing vs one intended for cutting would be the difference, once the length factor was taken into account. The knife I carry does NOT have a second sharp edge. Its intent is to CUT and maybe some light chopping since it has a thick blade. And cutting and chopping would certainly seem to be actions that would be used in a work setting vs stabbing. I know this might sound silly but do an image search for dagger. Look at the first 10 or 15 images that pop up. They all share some common features. Same thing for bowie knives. So, with that in mind, I can see how my baby K-Bar could be considered in that category. And thus, I don't carry it. Once again, IANAL, and YMMV.

I EDC a Cold Steel Safe-Keeper III in-waistband at 9o'clock.

It is a "push knife", which means it has a T-shaped handle. Cold Steel makes other models of Safe-Keepers (the I and II) as well as the Safe-Maker line. I opted for the Safe-Keeper III because it is single-edged. Some of the pictures of it may look like a double-edged knife/dagger (and the other models are double-edged), but the Safe-Keeper III is single-edged. I've seen lots of complaints about the plastic sheath, but in almost a year of daily carry, I've had no issues. I wear the sheath inside the waistband, putting the sheath clip on the pants themselves, between the pants and belt. I've had no issues with retention or with the holster coming loose during draw (as long as the belt is being worn; going without a belt makes this a problem on the occasions I'm carrying the knife but not the pistol).

I don't use the knife for anything. It stays sharp and unused, ready for self-defense if needed (and hope it is never needed).
