She doesn't like the initial take up before you get to the set. I agree it takes some getting use to.
Brownell's has a standard 5 lb trigger kit that looks good and get's high reviews.
Heck i might sell both my M&P's and get another 1911 9mm and be done with it.
By take up, does she simply want a 1911 trigger short and crisp? You're not likely to find that on any DA/SA, DAO, nor striker-fired gun without a lot of custom trigger work or trigger enhancement kit ( like the APEX M&P stuff or Sig SRT etc).
BUT if she simply doesn't like the loose "slack" before sear engages on M&P ( one of my gripes too) then perhaps something from Kahr - similar pull length, but smooth and steady weight all the way thru (more like a true DAO trigger). Some say it feels "spongy" so that may bother her too.
The other very realistic alternative is for her to TRAIN herself to shoot other triggers - not just the 1911, which is unique and intuitive. But with proper training reps - live fire and dry fire, 1,000s of reps - she can master any other trigger.
I don't know her experience level, but perhaps practice/training is a better place to spend time/money than simply trying to find exactly the right gun & trigger set up
Your comments are spot on. The slack is the problem. She just graduated from college and we have started shooting regularly. Heck based on what college was costing us buying a new handgun is a rfeal bargin.

Appreciate the tip. Did some reading and they get great reviews.
STI also announced a new line up of the Spartan and several other models that will be worth exploring.
The STI Spartan (at least the frame & slide) is made by Armscor in the Phillipines on the same machines that make the Rock Island 1911s.

I have had sever XD's over the years, I LOVE THEM!!!! I have tried many different types of handguns. XD's fit me perfectly. I recently bought a Sig p250, i hated it, felt like a cheap toy, plastic junk. I hate DOA triggers and it wasn't accurate, AT ALL!
My two cents. I have a Sig 2022 that I thoroughly enjoy and it was less than $350 though it might be a little chunky for smaller hands. I think someone mentioned the Rock Island 1911 earlier and you might look at the mid-size (they have a two tone look your daughter may like). And finally, I've heard some good things about the FNP-9 and I think it's a handsome looking piece but I haven't actually shot one. All these are available with a little shopping at under $400. Good luck and let us know the winner.

I have a P95DC and it is rock solid on reliability and will fire +p and +p+ without a hiccup. I honestly don't know why they are not more popular.

I agree with a few others drop an Apex trigger kit or another brand in the M&P and it cost a lot less than a new gun, look at it as an enhancement to a great weapon. And you can find an instructional video on the net to show you how to do it yourself. No different that someone buying a $30,000 truck, drive it off the lot straight to a tire store and spend 4 grand on wheels and tires.

The difference here is that you already have the M&P so the after market parts are the only new purchase. Try this first, if she doesn't like it, your only out the $150-$200 for parts not $400-$600 on a new pistol that she doesn't like. If she does like, you just got yourself a reason to get you a new pistol to replace your M&P your daughter now has.

Love my Glock 19 but since you're not interested in it, I can't help you.
p.s. You may not like Glock, but you shouldn't discount it for her. IF she likes it and shoots well with it, then maybe it's the gun for her.

I picked up a Taurus PT809 over Christmas for 299.00 (Academy), and I have to say I love it. It's a nice SA/DA combo of 1911 and plastic, because it has a hammer. You can carry Condition One with safety on, or Two and have the DA option if/when you need it. It is a bit big for carry, but not bad in winter with a jacket. The 800 series seems to be enjoying some nice reviews, and I love the way this pistol handles - had one FTE (my son limp-wristed it, I'm sure), but it's performed flawlessly since. I'm seriously looking at adding the 845 to my collection.
Also looking at the 740 for EDC - lots of power, and about as thick as a deck of cards.
I also went shooting with my 22 yr old daughter. She was interested in buying a handgun. We went to our local range; they have a rental program where you can shoot all of their handguns for $25.00 as long as you’re buying their ammo. We shot about 8 guns that were the size and caliber she wanted Compact or subcompact 9mm. Sub Compact S&W M&P, Compact Glock 9mm not sub, Compact XD, Sig 250 compact, also shot a 5 inch XDM & M&P pro. We had just finished shooting My Ruger MK1 (I always start ladies with 22s) and My STI Spartan 9mm 1911 with by basic 147gr cheater (IDPA) load, both have great triggers. She didn't like either M&P thought the XDs were OK, hated the sig 250 then as an after thought we shot a Ruger SR9c. That's when she stopped shooting and said I want that one. This was a chance for old Dad to shoot a few guns as well (I had never shot a polymer gun before). I could see some advantages with the M&P & XDM but the triggers would need kits installed. The little ruger surprised me when i shot it the trigger broke a lot quicker than the Glocks,XD,or M&P. The more I shot it the more I liked it. The next week she purchase one maybe she will let me shoot it!
Yes there is a plastic 1911 Rock River is coming out with one both Bul and Kimber marketed on but don’t remember a 9mm version.

May i ask which range you were at.
I'd like to take my daughter out there this weekend.
