The man has a shooting range outside his back door. It's not surprising that he's a superb shooter. To answer the question, its the shooter, not the gun or the hat.

Reminds me of a story that is legend among guitarists..... Chet Atkins was in the green room of a TV show on which he was about to appear, waiting to get the call to go on stage. He was picking around on his guitar, and another one of the show's guests in the green room said, "Nice soundin' guitar!" Atkins set the guitar down, fixed the other guy with a gimlet eye, and said, "Now how does it sound?" Game, set, match.

Shooting is like that.

It takes passion (or at least an aptitude), means, and lots of good practice to be good at anything. The Chet Atkins anecdote is a perfect illustration of this. I play around with a guitar and can make pleasant sounds with one, but my cousin can make one sing. The difference is probably a bit of aptitude and passion, but primarily lots and lots of good practice.

Also, developed talents must be nurtured to remain at their highest level. While someone with a boatload of developed talent is not likely to see it all vanish without practicing for a while, continued practice will keep them at a higher level of performance. I know several good shooters that would have to not practice for a WHILE as I practiced a lot before I could hope to reach their level. This holds true for everything I can think of -- languages, musical instruments, shooting, etc....

When you think about it, shooting a gun is fairly easy if you know how to load, point and pull. However true gun handling is dicipline, forcus, self control and of course training and practice.
