You need to try your hand at the Beretta PX4 in .40. Its a sweet platform and is customizable to fit the shooters hand. The felt recoil is comparable to a 9mm due to the rotating barrel design. I love mine.

Plus its got great mag cap. I carry 14+1.

+1 +1 +1 for kauboy. That was the Christmas present my wife wanted. She loves it, Mom does too, (got to get another one now.) & if I leave a 1911 platform that will be my first try.
Hers is a 9mm but the .40 is the same frame. I have held one but not shot it. The only thing I dont like about it is the rail & that makes for not many holsters yet. That is cosmetic. Just like traditional lines. Spell that 1911, Ruger Redhawk, or S&W 66.
It wont be long until there are some good holsters out for it also though.

It's not the hammer of Thor, it's just a pistol round.

TX Rancher has a good point, more rounds in your pistol means more shots you can get on the BG without messing with your gun.

TX Rancher wrote: In my mind, by its very nature, a pistol represents a trade off. As I stated in an earlier post, I rather have a rifle and relegate the pistol to backup. Some people draw the line at 38, some pick 9mil, others go 40, and a lot of folks opt for 45. But there are harder hitting pistol rounds then all of those, so why stop at 45? It just comes down to where the individual draws the line between size, recoil, and perceived situations.
I'd drink to that. I'd take a .357 Magnum over a .45 acp, but the reason I'd prefer to carry a .45 acp is because, to me, the .357 Magnum is too loud and produces too much muzzle flash as a concealed carry weapon.

No, but I'd say overall it's a more successful man stopper than the 9mm.

I really don't have anything against the 9mm. In fact, I'd love to own a Kel-Tec P11 and a pocket holster. That said, I'd like to carry the most powerful calibre that I can within my own comfort tolerances. If I can carry a gun that shoots something more powerful than a 9mm, then I will.

Perhaps it hit a car or something, bounced and then struck him. I am confident that in the range they were probably at that a 9mil to the skull would probably penetrate both sides and do fair damage.

I've seen a 9mm go through 9 sheets of 1/2 sheetrock and 3 2x4's......and it was a frangible round to boot. I have no doubt that the 124gr +P Win Rangers I carry will do the job. Too bad it didn't state if it was a FMJ or JHP in his pumpkin.........great shooting though!!! No FTN there!

Actually there are a lot of holsters out now. Comp-Tac can make almost any of their holsters for it. Tucker Gun leather makes a few. Blade-Tech has some kydex ones. And if you like exotic leathers, take a look a age-ranger's sharkskin setup from Rafter S.:

They are starting to show up everywhere for this gun. Even some competition models. And of course you can always go with the tried and true Uncle Mike's. ;-)

Comp-Tac makes a nice rig. I use this for IDPA and love it. The Rafter S is extremely comfortable and works great. No doubt the sharkskin will last a lifetime. The only thing we're missing now is a holster for the PX4 with light attached.

depends on how you tell the story, and what details you know. i know of a few multi-shot suicides. usually those are to the chest. one i recall was done with a newly purchased colt .45. she fired twice to the chest.

i worked one where a guy put the barrel to the roof of his mouth and fired. it was a full-house .357 magnum round. it didn't clear the skull. in fact, it looked like one side of his face shifted up some. very odd thing to see, and an image i'll likely not forget anytime soon, even though this happened 10 years ago. there was a clean hole in the roof of the mouth, and a lot of the teeth were destroyed; likely from recoil and muzzle blast. bleeding was just massive. guy is still alive today.

one guy was intending on killing his girlfriend, then himself. after seeing that it took 3 head shots to completely finish her off, he felt it wasn't as clean as he'd liked, and changed his mind to do the same to himself.

i've seen crime scene photos of point blank head shots from a shotgun that just peel the skin off. if you want to get the job done, a 7mm magnum is the way to go. very little left after that.

while this may sound morbid, it goes along with what's being discussed. bullets are little tiny objects. 115 to 230 grains is not a lot of mass. pistol bullets travel far slower than rifle bullets. a tiny little object can easily be deflected. consider the difference in velocity from a rifle and pistol though. i could definitely see how a bullet could lodge in a skull and not penetrate.

we fired through car windshields once. shooting from outside in, the bullets deflect up. this is laminated glass where a bullet should conceivably zip right through, but there is just enough pressure behind the glass to deflect the bullet up a few inches from the windshield to the headrest. shooting from outside in, it's the exact opposite; bullet deflects down. in doing this, a variety of windshields were used, and several pistol calibers, shotguns, and .223 rifles were used. all had the same results. that tiny rake in the windshield deflects the bullets.

what's my point? i will continue to carry my 9mm because i know i can hit exactly what i'm aiming at. i don't care if it goes through, or if it lodges in your head, so long as whatever is being done against me stops immediately. 9mm is my favorite pistol caliber, and will continue to be.
Good post Chris.

Reminds me of a case where a lady was shot point blank with a .357 in the head by a serial killer. The serial killer, who had already murdered numerous people, thought the woman was dead and left her laying on the roadside. By some miracle the .357 bounced off the lady's skull, and she's alive and well today. As a bonus the information she provided to police helped track down the serial killer.

I carry a .45 and I don't assume that a single headshot will drop a BG.

Personally I believe that with modern JHP ammo; 9mm, .40, .357, or .45 are adequate for handguns. With the recognition that handguns in general aren't big stoppers.

OK, this thread is somewhat dead, so first, apologies for resurrecting it.

I wanted to post two pictures that I had sitting on a site that has been down for a few weeks. These are 2 pictures giving the relative size differences between common handgun ammo, both unexpanded and expanded.
