1911 in 9MM?

#1

Post by Ron C »

So, what are the choices out there in 1911 frame 9mm? I have seen the EMP, but want something a little larger framed, and easier on the check book.

My choice for 9mm stems from a couple of places. My PX4 is chambered in 9mm and I would like to keep the cartridges the same. Second, my 15 y.o. daughter shoots with me, and I would like to keep the felt recoil down for her.

Speak to me!

Thanks,

Springfield Armory makes at least a few versions of its larger-framed 1911's chambered in 9mm. If you're looking for something a little more customized (read expensive) STI makes some of its 1911's chambered in 9mm.

Good luck finding what you want, and congratulations on keeping the next generation interested in shooting.

Kimber also makes a 9mm 1911, but its not what I would call light on the wallet.

Para-Ordnance is another that makes a couple of different full-sized 1911s in 9mm. But the Paras and the Springfields are all around the $1K+ price-point. And for a couple of Gs, Les Baer produces at least three models of semi-custom 9mm. ;-)

I've never really done any looking for a 1911 in 9mm, but my guess is that $1K Springfield/Para price is probably going to hold within a couple of hundred bucks, unless you find something used. The inexpensive 1911s that I've seen--hovering new in the high $400s to the $600s--have all been .45 ACP. I have a feeling that the 9mm format, since it isn't really native to the 1911, costs a bit more to re-fit. Don't quote me on that, though.

The three cheapest options I can think of will be Springfield, Kimber or Colt in ascending order of cost.

Springfield Armory offers a 9mm Government model as does Kimber. Both a very soft shooting but also a bit slow for my tastes. If you want a 9mm 1911, the Commander or Champion length 1911s are a better option IMHO. I think all Springfield 9mm's are under $850.

Kimber has two Champion length guns chambered for 9mm in their catalog. One costs more than the other simply because it has a "pretty" baked on finish, nightsights and a machine checkered frontstrap. I think all the Kimber 9mm's are under $1000.

The Colt option is the most expensive because the people who have 9mm Colt Commanders in good condition are VERY proud of them. There are also some in slightly better condition than a used boat anchor and the owners still want high prices for them so beware. Having said that, Colt does still sell a 38 Super Commander. These are current production guns which are easily converted to 9x19mm with an aftermarket barrel. A new Colt and aftermarket barrel will probably cost you about $1000 with gunsmith fitting.

Almost all the other options that come to mind tend to be more expensive. STI's RANGERII is an option but you'll have to order it from STI in 9mm, I've never seen one advertised in stock in that caliber. Cost may be similar to buying the Kimber but I don't know. STI's VIP or Tactical4.15 models will probably be more costly than any option discussed so far.

Thanks for the replies so far, and keep 'em coming.

Looks like I am going to be in the $780 and up price range for something I am looking for.

I am really liking the looks of the Springfields at this point.

How does a Kimber Pro Carry II on 9mm for $699 sound? Local dealer has one in stock.

Buy it now before either of you comes to your senses.

Have you considered letting your daughter try shooting a heavier .45?
I was surprised that the recoil wasn't as bad as everyone said.

The NRA & TSRA are a bargain; they're much cheaper than the cold, dead hands experience.

Get a Star B or BM. It's ergonomically and cosmetically the same as a 1911, with only a few practical differences. Remove the pesky magazine "safety" disconnect, and the manual of arms is identical to the 1911.

The B is a full-size service pistol, and the BM is a Commander-sized gun.

Best of all, both are MUCH cheaper than a new 9mm, while still retaining quality (gotta love surplused-out police/military guns  ).

A BM was my first pistol, a gift from my grandfather. I can say with some certainty that it's one of the easiest pistols to shoot, and pretty accurate too.

You should be able to find several on your online firearms auction site of choice.
