Whenever I make work related package drop offs, I'll come in and put it on the counter and say "its pre-paid" since I did all the shipping labels and stuff online. Most of the stuff we ship is of very little nominal value, but I can see how FedEx could "lose" it if you do not wait until you see them scan it into their system.

My dealer wants to wait until Monday or Tuesday to see if the gun shows up and if not it will have to be reported as stolen to the police and ATF.

The gun was taken to FedEx on Monday Nov 22nd. I am unclear what facility the gun was taken to and am assuming it was a store versus on of those drop boxes. I am also unclear what type service was paid for (i.e. overnight/next day, 2 day or ????). What makes me "wonder" about things is the fact that there is no receipt. That is awfully odd if you ask me.

Hopefully the gun will show up Monday/Tuesday. If not, things may get ugly. Thankfully the gun was logged into the dealer's log but that doesn't make me feel any better.
If it was me, I would report it as stolen right away, you don't hurt anyone if it magically shows up later right? if it was stolen, by the time you have the police report its probably going to be at a pawnshop.

Good you should be covered. Your FFL will be on the hook. You shipped in good faith and through the proper resources. Let your buyer and your FFL sort it out.

In my own dealings, I insist on having a "wet signature" receipt in my own custody. Is a FFL log entry really that good? :confused5

It better be, or their FFL could be in jeopardy.

Not having a receipt is actually extremely common when packages are dropped off directly. I drop by a few packages a month that are prepaid online. I don't wait for them to scan in unless the value is of consequence. If it was at a fedex center the drop-off is likely on camera. Fedex store may be hit or miss. No telling how long the camera data is held or what steps it would take to get someone to look at it. A police report here may(not) help.

If it has been a week then it has been too long in my opinion. Mis/Unscanned packages usually show up within a day or two in the system at the latest in my experience. Even given the holiday week you are past that window. Past that and there is a chance it has truly been lost/stolen. I'd be pressing hard to get answers first thing tomorrow.

Yes, today is "D-Day" as far as I'm concerned.

In my opinion, no one should just "drop off" a firearm, otherwise how would they collect the insurance from FedEX if FedEx says they don't have the package? I paid my FFL to ship and insure and if FedEx won't pony up then the FFL should have to. By not getting a receipt he basically is "self-insuring" it.

I'm suppose to hear from my FFL today.

I would report the gun stolen immediately. The FiveseveN is a very hot gun across the border and they are high prize to a thief in the know. An unscrupulous individual can walk one of those across into Mexico and sell it for 3 times the cost new. If someone at Fedex stole it, they likely knew what it was and may be planning to "ship" it across the border where they could sell it for a lot more than at a gun show or pawn shop. Notify the authorities ASAP. Better safe than sorry.

I am going to reimburse my buyer in full (purchase price of gun and shipping) and my FFL is going to reimburse me. I don't think it would be right to have my buyer have to work it out with my dealer. I'm the one who chose the dealer so I want to make it right for my buyer.

I'm suppose to meet with my dealer tomorrow after work for reimbursement and I'll mail a money order to my buyer that evening. My dealer is still hoping the gun will show up but it hasn't been scanned at any of the stops between here and the destination so I think it is certainly lost/stolen.

I have a feeling that it wasn't declared as a handgun in which case FedEx wouldn't have paid the insurance even if my FFL had a receipt. Of course now that they know it's a handgun maybe they'll put more effort into trying to find the package. I'm sorry this happened because I really like my dealer and I know it's tough to shell out that much money right here at Christmas time.

My dealer is going to report it as stolen to the ATF since he has all the details. He'll also report it to the police but needs to find out which police department has jurisdiction.....the one where the dealer does business or the one where the FedEx center is located (they are different).

Guess that's it. Still makes me sick knowing my gun is "out there somewhere" in the criminal world and that I could get a knock on my door about it some day. I'll get a copy of the police report and a statement from my dealer so that I'll have proof that it was indeed reported as stolen.

I think I'm done with selling any more guns for awhile, this has made me a nervous wreck (because I obsess over things like this and hate not having "closure").

Thanks for everyone's comments and suggestions.

I feel bad for your FFL, but it a lesson to me - always get a receipt and insurance. This is a good chunk of money to lose.

I feel bad too because I like him and I know his wife and kids. He works very hard as he has a full time job in addition to his FFL duties. I'm going to try to throw more business his way to help with his loss. And I'm still hoping he can work something out with FedEx since he knows some of the people at that facility pretty well. It's a sad event for everyone.

Wow, sorry to hear about this terrible situation.

I have a friend who is in DFW looking for a Five Seven. I'll pass the word and serial # on to him just in case someone tries to sell him this handgun.

Good luck and I hope everything gets resolved.

FOLLOW-UP

It appears my Five Seven has been recovered and is being shipped back to my dealer. I'm a little unclear how my dealer found out, but the gun was shipped to the wrong FFL dealer (in SD) who supposedly put it away waiting for the customer to call. My dealer didn't have a receipt for the Fed Ex shipment and didn't know it was delivered and being held by the wrong dealer. And that dealer didn't call my dealer or the customer when the gun was received (info was inside the package). Maybe he called today which is how my dealer found out, I'm just not sure. Anyway, that's what I was told. :headscratch

Once the gun is received (Friday or Monday) my dealer will notify the police, ATF and FedEx that the gun was found. I'm still holding my breath that the gun indeed shows up. And it better be in like new condition!!!

Last week I refunded the full price of the purchase to my buyer (including shipping/insurance fee, fee for money order and priority mailing fee for sending the money order). I was the one responsible for getting the gun to my buyer and so I feel that I was the one to refund every bit of his money, not my dealer. That's just the way I think things should work.

So, assuming I do get back my gun, I'm out the GB auction fee and the shipping/transfer fee I paid to my dealer. Of course I feel certain my dealer will work with me on that.

I'm was so stressed out about this particular gun nearly being lost/stolen that I'm keeping it for now. I already spent the money I "thought" I had for another gun but at this point I'm in no mood to resell/ship this gun again. December is a hectic month for me. I just got back into town from California and will be leaving town again next week for Oklahoma. Then it's Christmas and company coming. I may sell the gun later but will try a local sell first.

I'll post one more time once the gun is actually in my possession.

Being the cynic I am, I'd call the SD FFL and ask for his side of the story. The cynic in me would say that you'd never get the supposed guy's name or number because he doesn't exist. I'm sure there'd be some sort of perfectly valid explanation about not having saved the number in the phone or some such.

I must be in a really bad mood, but things don't add up with your FFL. How convenient that he didn't have a receipt, FedEx had absolutely no history of it being scanned in any location anywhere, there's no insurance on it, your rare piece that can sell for mega bucks on the black market just disappears, but then with the police involved all of a sudden it shows back up under shady conditions, but still none of it makes sense to you and none of the communications go through any official channels. And still there is no documentation on what's happening. I call bunk. I hope for your sake that I have to pick up the entire deck (ie that I am wrong).

I'm glad it looks like you'll have it back in your hands soon.
