The hard hitting Speer Gold Dot .45 230 grain is all I use in my Kimber.
Feeds reliably and has a proven track record.

For the Snubby, it's Winchester Supreme Elite Bonded PDX1 38 Special +P 130 grain.

I have been using the winchester PDX1 165 grain .40 in my sig, shoots accurelty and feels like it would really pack a punch and now that walmart keeps it instock its super easy to get ahold of which was one of the deciding factors after I read review on different ammo.

I am currently working on this same question myself. I have heard and read good things about the Winchester Ranger SXT line. Specifically about it being a good performing JHP for the price point. I can't find it locally, however, and have not yet ordered any online.

Most of the SD ammo people talk about seem to run about $1 or more per round in 9mm. The SXT (either the '147gr' or the '+P+ 115gr') seems to run closer to 50 cents per round in 9mm. I don't want every decision to be about money. But if I can get the same performance in a round that cost half as much, it seems like a winner to me.

But I am still doing research - I appreciate your question HarleyDave! :thumbs2:

ETA: Much of what I have read claim that the SXT is pretty much the same bullet as the Black Talon that Winchester was forced to pull due to 'public outcry'.

I use Federal Vital Shok 230 grain in my .45. I use Federal Vital Shok for all my self-defense loads on all calibers except my FivenseveN. I don't have an intelligent, researched reason for why I use this ammo. It feeds very reliably for me, but the truth is, I grew up shooting Federal, and I have just stuck with it. Dumb reason I know.
