Is there a standard course of fire used for qualification?

The course of fire is strictly defined, though the state regulations are not online at the moment:

Course of Fire:

3 yard line - 20 shots:

1 shot in 2 seconds, 5 times
2 shots in 3 seconds, 5 times
5 shots in 10 seconds, once

7 yard line - 20 shots:

5 shots in 10 seconds, once
1 shot in 3 seconds, 5 times
2 shots in 4 seconds, once
3 shots in 6 seconds, once
5 shots in 15 seconds, once

15 yard line - 10 shots:

2 shots in 6 seconds, once
3 shots in 9 seconds, once
5 shots in 15 seconds, once

The scoring is such that if you shoot safely and keep all your shots in the 9-ring at 3 and 7 yards, the 15-yard shooting doesn't even matter.

Most people shoot too fast. Slow down and get your hits. You will do fine.

Very true.

Even with the strings of five shots in ten seconds, you have time for a breath between shots.

One of the worst things you can do in terms of accuracy is fire multiple shots on the same breath.

do not get caught up in the shot cadence around you. They are shooting too fast. You are breathing and getting hits...Double plug so you do not hear them.....really....10 seconds is a lifetime.

I was a little worried about it. I just did my class. The way the drill is set up you really dont have to worry about time.

It was the part I was most nervous about when I took my class. I walked myself through it a couple of times at the range I go to before the class and found it wasn't so bad, getting an accurate shot off every 2 seconds is not as fast as it sounds. The 5-point area on the target is pretty large, shooting a passing score should not be cause for concern for anyone who has even a little shooting experience.

I remember one of the instructors telling me that I had already passed the shooting portion before we moved the targets back to the 15 yard line. I'm a passable shot, not a great one; and I had no trouble with it at all. Just follow the directions, to the letter, and you'll be fine.

I think that when people struggle with it, it isn't so much having trouble with the shooting as it is having trouble following directions about how many to load, and when to start or stop shooting.

Hmmm....that explains how some of the others in my class passed......

I took the class in Terrell, from a police Captain. At one point he came over, looked at my target and said, "OK, smarty pants. Let's see how you do at 15 yards." If you can't hit the bullseye at 3 yards you either have your eyes closed or you need to learn how to shoot properly.

Agreed. I felt the same way.
I hadn't shot in well over 6 months and passed with some thing like 95%.

Good Luck. I practice alot at the 15 yard range to keep my aim as sharp as possible.

The shooting qualification is really easy and should not be a problem for anybody who is even just a bit familiar with firearms. If anybody fails it I would not want to be in the same county as them if they had a gun.....

Im a RSO for a Firearms Instructor here in the Conroe/Lake Conroe area.... a few months ago, we were holding a class that had a lady that had never fired a gun in her life... she shot a 248 shooting a .380. I was able to coach her during the qualification and found that she was a natural... needed little coaching other than stance and breath control suggestions.

We have had one "new to guns" student in the last three CHL classes we had. They shot 250, 247, and 248. The course is fairly easy but I think instances like these speaks a lot to the caliber of those desiring a concealed carry license! (pun intended.)
