I don't mind layaway and I don't mind doing the 0% interest in store credit accounts either. If you really want to get into the economics of it think about it like this. If I had $1000 cash in the bank as fun money and a gun store was doing a 0% for a year deal I would still do the 0% deal. You can leave that money in your bank account and it will make money and you don't pay anything extra on the loan. SO you can pay out from your savings and at the end of them term you will have full use of the product for a year or six months AND more money than you started out with due to gains from interest.
Lay-away to me is a forced savings plan and I don't think of it as a bad thing either. Some folks just aren't as good at putting money aside for their hobbies as others. I know I'm much better at paying off a layaway than just putting the money aside. Now saving for other stuff sure but my fun money can often be spent impulsively. So by going out and putting money down on the firearm I tie myself to it and therefore I'm going to make sure that I don't spend the money on other stuff.
The people defaulting on a lay-away is way less than you would think by the way.

30% interest isn't that far out of the ordinary, maybe 5% high. If you do it correctly with the 0% for a year and pay it off within the allotted time, you can earn interest on the money you kept in the bank. Same thing if you pay off your card every month, you never pay interest and you still build up your credit score.

I need to check around I thought lay-a-way had died off with that wonderfully sane practice of zero percent financing forever. Come to think of it 0% is kind of like lay-a-way except most people overpay and take it with them to wear it out before they finish paying for it.

Exactly!!!! I bought a Kimber Eclipse in Ultra Carry with coins I had been throwing in a jug for around 15 years or so. It was kind of cool... I felt like I got a free gun. But it did take 15 years of throwing my pocket change in a jug to come up with 1200 bucks.USA1 wrote:No, but it keeps me from dipping into the envelopejester wrote:What's the advantage of doing layaway instead of sticking the money in an envelope at home? LOL....no... but that would have been funny. I had one jug that must have weighed 75 pounds...LOL. It was pennies and I might have gotten 40 bucks from it. The other jug was all nickles, dimes, quarters.... I am afraid my friends at bullet trap would have kicked me in the rump if I had walked in there with all that change... Don't think I wasn't tempted to try it as a prank.USA1 wrote:Did you dump the jug of coins out on the counter at the gun store?03Lightningrocks wrote:Exactly!!!! I too have purchased many guns from Tomball Pawn. Several from Richard when he was there. I just purchased my Kimber from them and saved over $100.00 from the gun show. But if you don't like saving hard earned cash! Well! Not much can be said.
