With regard to ported guns, isn't the upside that recoil is
dissipated, but the downside is that hot gases may burn your
hand or face while shooting such a weapon?

There are a lot of hot gas and particles which come venting up outta that thing, but the design works very well if you hold the pistol at arms' length. You would have to be very careful if shooting it from anything less than extended arms and/or below eye-level because that nasty stuff can easily put out an eye. You don't want to shoot it from the hip, for example.

In response to MojoTexas I carry a single stack Kimber CDP Pro normally but if I have to go to a bad area I carry the doublestack and a spare mag. 27rds available!

I carry the single-stack Kimber and two spare magazines. Since I use the 8-round Wilson Combat mags, that gives me 25 rounds if I have one in the pipe. :-)
