Not the best, but good enough

May I present some information for your consideration?

Best gun, worst gun, adequate gun, expensive gun, cheap gun, resonably priced gun.
Everybody has their own opinion.

The Smith & Wesson Sigma series of pistols are made in the USA, they have a lifetime warranty. I have heard that the S&W customer service is very good. Even to the point that they will supply you with a prepaid mailing lable to return a pistol for service. They are plastic and stainless steel, not much to rust other than a few springs and pins.

The Sigmas have been on sale in the past around Houston and on the internet in the $289-$319 range. From the end of 2009 to April 30 2010 S&W was offering a $50 rebate or 2 free magazines.

I bought one in April. I had read on the internet that they had a terrible DOA trigger. I also had read about do it yourself trigger mods.

I did a do it yourself trigger job on mine.


That's 45 rounds fired at 25 feet with a two handed grip.

I can't do any better than that with a Sig P229 that costs 3 times what the Sigma cost.

Maybe if I got some professional training or practiced more I could shoot a tighter group.
It is good enough for me. I feel safe to defend myself.

I like to try different things. I think the Sigma was worth the money. It won't replace my Sigs or Glocks, but I wouldn't be worried if it was the only thing I had.

I know it's not up to Mr. Camps standards, but that's my report on the Sigma.

I like S&W's but my son-in-law had a Sigma and the trigger was so bad neither one of us could hit anything with it.

I have one, I shoot it well, but the extra stiff trigger (11 lbs or so) is a lot to get used to when you go from a 4-5 lb pull.
My brother-in-law, who had never shot a pistol before, at 7 yards keeps it grouped from bullseye out 3 inches with it.
But then I put my wifes new XD9sc in his hand, and he groups from bull to 2 inches at 7 yards with it.

if you are going to only have 1 gun, and have a limited budget, the SW Sigma is good for that.
and certainly a good starter gun, if your hand is sized right to get a good grip on the double stack

Will OP post links to explanations (or his own explanations) of how to do these trigger mods? Don't own a Sigma - have always avoided them because of the "bad trigger" reputation. But I'm curious ...

Since we are stating opinions here, I think I would forgo the Sigma and get a Millenium pro in DAO. Its got a better trigger and has a restrike capability for around the same price. Just sayin...

I agree, nothing ever negative said about the Millenium. I don't own either but have pulled both triggers before. I would buy the Taurus in a heart beat over the Sigma. Or you could have gotten a Taurus PT92 for $299.00 a month or so ago on sale and never looked back.

A Taurus PT92 weigh SUBSTANTIALLY more than a Sigma or any other polymer-framed gun. approximately 34 oz unloaded for PT92 compared to about 24 oz unloaded for Sigma. Not a huge deal if this is strictly a glovebox gun. But if it ever needs to be carried, can make a difference unless you also spend an extra $100-$200 on quality gun belt and holster. I've carried Glocks (same relative size/weight as Sigma) in $15 nylon holster attached to a $15 belt from Wal Mart .... not recommended, and not as comfortable as a quality belt/holster rig .... but can be done with a polymer-frame gun - doubt you could comfortably do same all-day with something as large and heavy as a PT92

This is part 2 of a 5 part series by some guy named Jeff. Of all the stuff I saw on youtube this was the best in my opinion.
I won't post here what I did to my gun. But if you want to know PM me and I will tell you.

Just a FYI note about Taurus, they are made in Brazil and the customer service is NOT good. I own a Taurus PT145 Mil Pro. I also have a Kel-Tec P11. The Taurus has the best trigger, The P11 and the Sigma are about equal.

Additional note, S&W has come out with a NEW pistol, the SD40 & SD9. Very close to the Sigma but with an improved trigger and night sights. However it is more expensive than a Sigma and uses a different magazine. If this one ever gets a rebate that puts the final price below $300 I think it would be the winner.

I was just trying to point out that at $300 minus the $50 rebate you could get a made in the USA gun with an excellent lifetime warranty that shot pretty good.

I thought it was information worth passing on. I'm not saying everybody should have one, or buy this don't buy that.

From what I've read, the Sigma series is more reliable than the Millennium series, and in my book reliability trumps trigger. Like everyone else, I'm not keen on the trigger and the barrel is just a tiny bit longer than I want to conceal. With that said, If I needed a carry gun and had already spent most of my money on CHL class and license fees, I wouldn't hesitate to give a clerk $250 for one of them heaters in .40 or 9.

Had one for less than a week and then sold it, as I remember. Bad Glock copy IMHO.
