Groceries for guns

Guys/Gals,
I know it's been largely a comical attitude regarding this program but I'm not sure how I feel about all this. Part of me wants to drive the 30 miles down there and sit across the street in the bed of my pickup truck with a sign that says "I beat any competitors offer on guns" but the other half of me wants the sign to say "TEXAS! Keep your guns! They want you to disarm!" Does anyone feel similar or am I over thinking this? What kind of message does this send to the public? "Guns are bad. Trust the Police to defend you. You don't need guns." Or is this actually a good thing? Opinions please.

ps. I'm in if anyone wants to do something worthwhile about this.

I agree with you. Wish I could go. But other plans supersede.

Yeah I'm torn, I would go the 50 miles ... but also there's the Great Castell Kayak Race and/or some other events I want to go to more that day. If I thought they'd actually have any decent ones show up,I'd be there, or if I had a bunch of cheap fake guns I spent lless than $10.00 on, I'd be there ... actually if I hadn't traded a Grendel that accidently sat in a bucket of water in a shed for 8 years and was nuttin-but-rust inside such that the slide wouldn't rack and no part moved.... I'd be there to get my hundred bucks for it ....

And what would be the charge? Not disagreeing with you, just wondering what trumped up "charges" have been used in the past.

They'd probably go with the old standby "obstruction of justice" or "interfering with a government official in the conduct of his duties".

I don't recall reading of anyone actually being arrested/detained, but they were discouraged from remaining where they were.

I can't see that it is obstructing justice, and Police buying guns with money from another party, isn't part of their normal duties ...

Dunno what is across the street though .... sure wouldn't want to trespass ...

Perhaps I'd carry a notebook and pen and a Press badge, I'm sure some reporters would be there, and I dunno any law against me askin' anyone what's in the bag and if they say rusted pistol/water pistol or whatever I'd say ok ... if they say Glock 26 and a 1911 ... I'd consider dropping some cash on the ground and see what happens. But, it's doubtful IMHO, that anything worth $100.00 will show up there.... So, I'll probably be fishing or kayaking or something.

I have an old Mossberg .22lr that I'm going to turn in. I've had it since I was kid. it has never worked, It needs parts that are not made any more and someone cut the barrel and nickel plated it. it's horrendous

I'll put the $100.00 towards the 870P I just ordered from GT dist.

I think anyone who trades an old non-working piece o' junk for the $100 and then uses that $100 toward buying a new gun needs to send a nice note to the organizers of this (with a photo of you handing over the VISA debit card to the gun store employee) and tell them thanks for helping you to purchase a new worthwhile weapon

Killing 2 birds with one stone, I am making the 220 mile
drive down to Austin to turn in a trouble prone .22 Harrington
and Richardson .22 Plainsman rifle.

I'll get $100 for a gun that holds onto most every shell w/o
ejecting it and that will pay for my gas round trip and noshing
with my son (the AK-47 disarming son for those of you that
were reading his saga last June 2009 on the forum).

I'm anticipating that the church is not a 30.06 site and I will
be armed with my PT111 while I'm doing bidness with APD.

Wonder if they will ask for ID? If they do, it would be the 1st
LEO encounter for me to show my DL and CHL. Could be interesting
if they have a problem with me.

A whopping $200 for assault weapons, $100 for rifles and handguns. Time to dig out those old junkers and cash 'em in. IfAPD is going to waste my taxes, I might have to take advantage.

Does an AR-7 type rifle count as an assault weapon? Detachable 10-round mag, disassembles to a concealable (with creativity) size, semiauto, portrayed as a sniper weapon in a couple of movies, uses cheap ammo often purchased in packages of 500 or more, etc. I've considered picking up some of the barely-functional ones that occasionally pass through the local pawn shops just for these events.

In Kalifornia my XD40 probably counts as an Assault Weapon. Austin is in Kalifornia, isn't it?

soon as they open, just in case they run out of moolah.

I can stay over until Sunday if there's some ammo blasting to be had!!

Today I spoke with a Sgt at APD, determining whether
the buyback church was a 30.06 site.

He stated that no one participating in the gun buyback
program would be inside the church. They are conducting
this in the parking lot.

He asked why I asked about 30.06. I told him I didn't want
to leave my sidearm in my truck unless I had to. He asked if
I was turning in another firearm. I said yes, the rifle.

He raised no red flags about my being a CHL and carrying my
sidearm. He is going to be there tomorrow morning.

If anyone is there around 900 AM, I'll have on my white Stetson,
my USA flag shirt, and will be in the dark blue Ranger with the strobes
and the patriotic license plates. Come say howdy if you see me.

Gotta go - I'm running behind my anticipated ETD.
