Texas Heat + Gun In Car=???

I got in my truck a little while ago after a full days work and checked my console to make sure my gun was where I left it(as always) and then I touched it and it was quite warm after sitting inside the center console all day.
Today was beautiful and warm and its only going to get warmer....as we rapidly approah 100* days I was wondering if there are any side affects that can come from a gun being stored in a hot car all day either in a center console or in a glove box.
I was wondering what yalls opinions are on the topic.

Just wait until summer!!

There have been a few posts on this topic. During the summer months, for semi-automatics, I tend to switch to a grease, rather than regular lubricating oils.

I wouldn't worry about the gun but vibration and heat can do interesting things to ammo.

First Texas summer, huh? Oh man you are in for a treat!
Check those prior threads out - it'll be ok.
Just don't shove it into your IWB 'till it cools off!
Perhaps a member will post the tempature at which ammo starts to cook?

For the last couple of years I have left one of my carry guns in a lock box in my car in the worst of Texas heat. I have found that all of the ammo left that way has been fire able.

I'm pretty sure that the "flash point" for gun powder is somewhere around 400 degrees F (after a little google search) So unless you plan on parking your pickup in an oven while your at work, I think you'll be ok.

Though, I am not a scientist. IANASc.

The 100MPH West Texas wind, combined with the sand blocking out the sun, will help cool the ammo off a bit.

I've had a sodapop explode, and had a cigarette lighter explode in my car, both were exposed to the sun inside the car...but I'll keep ammo/mags wrapped in white like an Arab in the Desert... and out of the sun.

Slightly off topic.....but...... if you have to leave your gun in your truck and you want to keep the gun, find a better place for it than in the center console. Unless I'm the most unlucky person in Texas, your truck will at some point get broken into. If you can't for whatever reason mount a small safe somewhere inside the vehicle, at least put the gun somewhere that isn't the first place a thief will look.

Considering that I had two pistols in the cab of my li'l red Ranger last November when I lost the truck to an engine fire, and it got hot enough to melt almost everything melt-able in the cab... neither the .22 in the glove box (which was one of the items that melted, along with the folding grip for that particular mini-revolver) nor the .38 in the Ruger in the COM safe on the hump behind the gearshift cooked off.

I think the worst thing you'll have to worry about is whether the gun will be cool enough to handle if you have to use it at 4:00 pm on an August afternoon. And you can get around that with good grips.
