OK folks, enough comments on the off-color remarks. Please use some decorum when posting on these types of events. Loss of life is a sad thing, but proper and productive discussion and being able to learn from their mistakes is very crucial to gun safety.

When I read about Range accidents like this it serves to remind me to be watchful of others firearms handling as well as my own while at the range. I have watched many a shooter holding the weapon in a manner that sweeps the folks shooting to the left and right of them. This is probably the infraction I witness the most and it is not always new shooters either. I always step over and politely remind them to keep the gun pointing down range, even while loading a magazine. It amazes me to see folks set the gun on the table pointed directly to the person in the stall beside them. It is an easy rule to forget when standing in a stall with gun fire going off all around you. It makes me wish they had steel walls in between each bay. At least the bullet would bounce back and forth and get the right guy.

On a serious note, this is a real possibility. It would be beyond ingenious.

When was the last time anyone here thought the car was a good place to clean his gun?

On the other hand, vehicles are not at all unusual places for suicide.

The terms of any life insurance he had might provide a motive for staging the cleaning equipment if in fact that's what happened.

Based on the very scant information available, if it were my case I would pursue this angle unless and until sufficient information could be developed to rule it out.

The location of the wound, the angle of penetration, and the powder stippling which would help determine the distance of the muzzle from the entry point on the body would be important items to examine closely.

It is not funny when someone dies---especially from a gunshot wound, and especially in today's political climate.

I did not mean it to be funny. One of my best friends (and my employer) committed suicide 2 years ago. That is how I came to be newly self-employed. It is a terrible thing for the survivors to go through. He left 4 employees who had uprooted their families to move half way across the country to Texas without jobs. He left his wife without a husband. And he left his two children without a father. Suicide is not funny. Not in any way, shape, or form.

But you never know what a suicide is going to do. It is not uncommon for a suicidal person to clean up any "loose ends," so to speak, before they do themselves in. So my comment was, literally, maybe he wanted to kill himself with a clean gun — no joke.

You've worked around ER's. My experience working around so much death and destruction is that it desensitizes you. Doesn't make it right but it is real. I've have questioned my own reaction towards death. Suicide of someone close to you doesn't help either. Just MHO.

63 Y/O and they gave a name. I thought about posting the name but after reading this thread didn't thinkthat was a good idea.....now I have forgotten it!! Getting old is no fun....or maybe just too much fun when I was young They did say that the police said it was self inflicted but we all new that. Then they interviewed another CHL'er on the news. Not a negative report just tragic. Could very well be one of our own.

If it was truly unintended, I suspect he wanted to go back to "carry mode", and had bought all the hype about how clean a gun must be to be reliable. For the most part, we waaaaay over-clean our guns, well beyond what is necessary for proper function.

If this guy was truly a CHLer, it would certainly support this theory. If he had a CHL and spent an hour at the range, I can't imagine why he would purposely kill himself in his car in the parking lot. Red's has really had some serious trouble in less than a year. I wonder if there is going to be any investigations, or policy changes at Red's.

I don't think any policy changes would have helped this guy. Although it may help some of the other people who have had incidents there.

I know a couple ranges around here won't rent a gun to you if you are by yourself, or didn't bring you own guns, or you just look strange.

I think it was a very sad turn of events, and just goes to show how important the 4 rules are.

Oh I agree that policy changes probably won't help or change anything, but these tragedies tend to cause policy changes. I guess it sends a message that something has been done even if it's useless. I'm surprised that gun rentals are still legal considering what happened in Florida when that women killed her son.
