The terms of any life insurance he had might provide a motive for staging the cleaning equipment if in fact that's what happened.
Based on the very scant information available, if it were my case I would pursue this angle unless and until sufficient information could be developed to rule it out.
The location of the wound, the angle of penetration, and the powder stippling which would help determine the distance of the muzzle from the entry point on the body would be important items to examine closely.
