AD at Austin Gun Show
Interestingly enough, there was nothing in the news, or did I miss it? There was an AD at the Saxet Gun Show Saturday morning. No one was hurt. I was checking out some milsurp rifles about 50yds away when I heard it. There were plenty of uniformed LEOs in the place to check it out, apparently, they were looking for good deals, too.
From what I understand from conversations of other patrons and sellers, there was a dealer that had apparently neglected to empty the chamber of one of his .45's and somebody dropped the hammer on it. It ricochetted off the floor a wall and into the ceiling. The dealer was promptly escorted out of the facility and banned from selling there again. Again, this is the product of the rumor mill, after the shot went off.
I guess even the most experienced gun afficianado can overlook a simple safety procedure.

Good point!
More reason to escort the guy out. I know that if a customer asks to "check the action" the dealer will clip the tie, but you would think they'd do a safety racking action for a SA or check the cylinder in a revolver before handing it over. I wasn't right there, but the customer may have exercised the " never point a gun at something you don't want to destroy" rule by pulling the trigger in a safe(?) direction. I wonder if the customer was removed as well. Maybe the dealer fired it... I don't have all the facts.

Not to "nitpick" but that was a ND (Negligent discharge).
Thank you for sharing the story, it points to the need for better gun safety practices I.E. (always check every firearm, even if the person before you just did) no exceptions.
I was very impressed with LongTooth's safety habits the day we went shooting, he was always conscious about the loaded or unloaded state of every firearm we handled. Even when I handed him a pistol with the slide locked back, he looked into the chamber to confirm.
Its really very simple.
Rant over.

Thank you Flint. I try to stay conscious for every one that may be around. I am 56 & by the grace of God giving me safety first attitude on the job & w/ fire arms I have all my fingers after many years in heavy industry & no ND's w/ fire arms to date. I pray my safety record stays in tact. I need all my fingers for shooting & playing my guitar.

+1 on that, longtooth! Guns and guitars are my passion, as well.longtooth wrote:I need all my fingers for shooting & playing my guitar.
fadlan12, I wouldn't let a single incident sour you on the SAXET Gun Shows. Like any other marketplace, you're going to get a variety of sellers (and buyers), some of whom are not going to be to your liking. And there's absolutely no excuse for an ND. The show officials absolutely acted correctly to ban the guy.
I almost always make it to the SAXET show here in San Antonio. There are lots of dealers who deal fairly and go the extra mile to support their customers. Most of the weapons I own were bought at gun shows, and I've always been pleased with the deal I got (or I didn't make it).
Cheers,
Rod

Noted on the correction - ND vs AD.
So many acronyms get confusing!
I agree with rodc13, I was at the gun show because there are good deals to be had. The dealers and patrons alike are usually willing to give their expertise and opinions on gun matters. Always a friendly crowd. I was very happy with the purchase I made this weekend.

Longtooth, I have read many of your posts, and I always appreciate the high standards that you advocate and the good examples you set for handling and using firearms. However, now that I know your age, I may occasionally slip and refer to you as "Junior," so please understand if that happens.longtooth wrote:Thank you Flint. Hah, he's three years my senior, so I guess I get to call him "Old Man".

I am really honored to be flanked by men of such character. Thank you gentlemen more than you know.

Gotta get out of here!!!!!
We had one gun show here in Frisco and somebody had a ND. Don't know the details. That was the last one ever here. The anti's had a field day and we won't have any gun shows here again. They've also managed to get two local outdoor ranges closed down.
We took a short drive Sunday. Remember the days when the family piled into the family car and went for a Sunday drive? Now it's just bumper to bumper trafic trying to get past road improvements while driving past subdivision after subdvision of look alike houses.
We are moving to East Texas sometime in the near future where there is less development and some damn good gun ranges. I can't wait!

He was just a few tables away from me and the view was unimpeded as we are both located near the entrance. He is a retired police officer and a regular at local gun shows but he made a bad decision. The gun came in unloaded but, for some reason I will never know, he chambered a round and had the ND. The round impacted the floor and disintegrated with the jacket coming to rest a few tables away. From what I understand from conversations of other patrons and sellers, there was a dealer that had apparently neglected to empty the chamber of one of his .45's and somebody dropped the hammer on it. T____ and the Austin Policeman that carries the 1911 folded up his display and had him out the exit before I could figure out what happened.
Saxet policy is to permanently ban anyone discharging a firearm during a show and he is out just as much as the ammo dealer that kept threatening people with his pistol. Guess they'll both do the Lousiana shows now.
