Awesome thread! I was just going to start asking about defensive rounds, and almost all the information I could ask for is right here. I love this place

I'll be putting some Speer Gold Dots down range, and if I can find the Winchester Ranger SXT I'll try those as well. From what I've read - its just a personal preference between the two in performance, no?

Pretty much. In my opinion any modern JHP is going to get the job done. I just prefer GDHP's for the reasons I already mentioned.

The most important thing is that your chosen defensive round will cycle reliably through your gun and that you are proficient with it. I put about 500 rounds of 165 grain Gold Dots through my G22 before officially make it my carry round. That's probably a little excessive, but after 500 rounds and ZERO problems I KNOW that particular ammo works in my gun and that it will hit where I aim.

Just curious where you get Gold Dots from, Braden? I usually see boxes of 20 (or is it 25?) for $12.99-15.99, whereas Rangers go for $15-$17.99 for a box of 50 at gunshows. Price was one of the reasons I prefer the Rangers.

Nothing wrong with Gold Dots, though. I carry Rangers in .38spl +P, 9mm, and .40 and carry Double Tap Gold Dots in my USPc .45.

Braden is definitely right - if you put the bullet where it belongs, most modern loads will do the job equally well.

I buy all of my Gold Dots from Mirage Technologies.

http://www.miragetechnologies.net

They charge $17 per box of 50 for the .40 165 gr. rounds (don't know about the rest). You have to call them to place an order though. They don't have online ordering.

I found another place online one time that was a little cheaper but every time I tried to buy some they were out of stock. Mirage ALWAYS has them in stock because they sell mostly to LE, so I just avoid the hassle and buy from them.

I carried Double Taps for a while but at $24.95 a box for ammo that, in my opinion, is pretty hard on your gun I just decided they're not worth it. I tried Rangers and had no problems with them but ultimately went with GD because I always had a hard time finding Rangers and when I did they were usually more expensive than GD.

Factor in the shipping and your arguement about Gold Dots being cheaper is no longer true, although I certainly can't argue with the availability thing. I've seen boxes of Rangers only for about the same + shipping, so it's a wash if you go that route.

I usually pick up 2 or 3 boxes of Rangers whenever the Dallas Arms Collector's Association has a gunshow at Dallas Market Hall - there is a vender that always sets up there and has a plentiful supply of (I think) the entire Ranger line and sells at a real reasonable price. There's a show coming up in September I believe.

Truthfully, their price has gone up about $4.50 per box since I started using them a year ago. I used to get the same ammo for about $13.50 per 50 and that made it a pretty hard to beat deal. I called yesterday to verify their pricing before I posted it and it had gone up to $17 per 50. That's still not a bad price, but if I shop around I can probably do a little better. I bought a lot the last time I bought SD ammo so I haven't had to buy any in a while. I was a bit surprised when he told me it was $17 per box.

Of course, if you factor in gas and admission to the nearest gun show then it pretty much washes out any shipping costs.

Either way, good ammo can be had for decent prices if you go online or to a gun show. Buy it off the counter and you'll pay more for it.

I have heard good things about the Hornady TAP ammunition. I plan on getting some of it in multiple rifle and pistol calibers and checking it out.
