Interesting that he was at least the third victim of that robber that night.

Robbery Victim Fatally Shoots Suspect in W. Oak Lane
by KYW’s Al Novack
Philadelphia homicide detectives are investigating a shooting death of an unidentified man around midnight in the city's Ogontz section of West Oak Lane. In this case it was the victim of a would-be robbery that turned the tables around on an armed bandit.
The armed robber was shot when he tried to rob to his victim. The incident took place in the 6400 block of north 15th street in the city's Ogontz section in West Oak Lane.
The 24-year-old armed suspect was pronounced dead at the scene of a chest wound. Police say the victim who he had targeted to rob was carrying a hand gun. When the suspect demanded all his money, the victim pulled out a gun and fired a shot killing the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the suspect matches the description in two other hold-ups Saturday night and investigators say they do not expect to charge the victim.
Another report of the incident:

WEST OAK LANE - October 11, 2009 (WPVI) -- A would-be robber is dead after one of his alleged victims fights back.
It happened on North Street in Philadelphia's West Oak Lane section early Sunday morning.
Investigators say it apparently never crossed the thief's mind that his victim just might be armed.
Police say it was the man's third robbery of the night. He forced the victim up against a vehicle along the street and demanded money. That's when shots rang out - but not from the alleged robber.
"'POW, POW, POW.' Real loud gunshots."
Aaron Wisher was listening to the radio in his West Oak Lane home just after midnight when he heard a man on his cell phone quickly followed by seven or eight gunshots.
Wisher tells Action News, "After that I heard somebody yelling. Like, you know, just like talkin' trash. Like, 'Yeah, somethin', somethin', he got 'em, he got 'em. And I peeked out my window and saw somebody laying in the street."
He called 9-1-1 and police responded to investigate. As it turns out, the man who was being robbed had a license to carry a firearm, and shot the alleged robber.
Police say at this time no charges are expected to be filed.

Its amazing the number of folks that dont think that can be done. They never seem to factor in the OODA loop.

Thank you sir for the link.

The OODA description sounds kind of like management-speak in business school,
but I got the gist of it as it applies to armed self defense.

I believe it was originally from Air Force operations in Korea. It had to do with why our pilots were kicking butts even though they had "lesser" equipment. They were out-thinking the North Koreans and "getting inside their OODA loop" and making decisions and reacting to the new situation before the Koreans were able to identify that the situation had changed.

OODA: Observe, Orient, Decide, Act.

Col John Boyd was an instructor at the Air Force Fighter Weapons school, the Air Force equivalent of the Navy's "Top Gun." Later he played an important role in developing energy management techniques for fighter tactics, and pulled a tour at the Pentagon where he sponsored development of the F-15 and F-16.

After retirement he wrote on the art of war and combat. He proposed the OODA concept. Every one goes through those steps. If you can, by increased awareness and preparation execute them faster than your oponent, you win. He was at first ignored by the Air Force, but asked to speak and teach by the Marine Corps. His doctrine was eventually studied and adopted by all the service. "Speed Kills."

Are we sure the perp had a gun? It just says "armed". He may have had a knife or club.

Understanding where you are on the power curve and OODA loop has much to do with establishing initiative in a SD.
