Springfield makes a 3-inch GI model than can be had for around $500.
The folk who have the Rock Island or Centennial 1911 snubbies speak highly of them also. Finding one will be your challenge. Good luck.

I'm only 28, but I'm just getting started working on my collection of toys so I'm all about quantity right now and willing to give up on quality until later in life.

Seriously, quality is everything in firearms. A crap gun is money in the drain unless you can sell it to the next bigger fool. I would be more than happy to sell you my 4 inch Colt 1991A1 stainless for $500 if you just want quantity.
Please help the wounded store owner who fought off 3 robbers. He doesn't have medical insurance.

(Edited for profanity.) I'll give you $250 for it.

1. A $500 1911A1 Colt SS is worth a second and possibly third look; and,
2. More importantly, your reply to the gentleman's offer was well, er,..uh, less than gentlemanly.

While I may have been out of line, I take offense to this "gentleman" for implying that my desire, at my young age, to build a collection of affordable, reliable and practical firearms equates to me buying a bunch of "crap guns." If you think my post was "less than gentlemanly," I would urge you to show a fair amount of treatment to Stupid as well.
