got my Kahr back...

#1

Post by mr.72 »

So I sent my Kahr CW9 back after about 500 rounds, when it had developed a nasty habit of light strikes on 50% or more rounds. I sent it to Kahr and in less than 2 weeks it was back home. Came in today.

Curiously they replaced the magazine follower and the barrel ???

Range trip today to confirm it's fixed. More later.

Huh?

Replaced Mag follower and barrel for the symptom of light primer strikes?

Maybe the problem was with the Chamber dimensions in the barrel?

Anyway, I assume you have checked the serial number to make sure they sent the right gun back to you?

Perhaps the original was chambered wrong in the first place?

When I had a Kahr, it was sent in 3 times. All 3 times it was returned with barrel and mag follower replaced. It never did work.

Interesting.

Well I shot it today and it shoots flawlessly. Absolutely perfect for about maybe 100 rounds in a row. Magazine stayed in, no light strikes. This is the first time I have ever shot this gun in a range session of ~100 rounds and not had at least one light strike or at least one time that it didn't lock the slide open or release the magazine after the last round.

Also the original barrel had gotten a teensy bit of peening on it, and I recall I did find a burr forming on the left edge of the feed ramp during breakin and I buffed it off with a stone. That's the interface with the magazine follower. So maybe it was the mag follower, the barrel, or both, causing the problem. However it shoots great now.

Couple more range trips before I am fully confident in it, but this was a really good sign.

I have a CW9 that keeps dropping the mag after the last round. I called Kahr and they sent me a new mag release. I installed that but doesn't seem to help.

The strange thing is it only happens to me. My wife and son shoot it and it doesn't drop the mag. Also, if I shoot it one handed it doesn't drop the mag. I've made sure I'm not hitting the mag release. I really don't want to send it in. They probably wouldn't have the problem when they shoot it.

Even though you have been attentive to your grip, I bet you are pressing on the mag release somewhat. Did you replace the "spring" (wire) when you replaced the magazine release? It's not an easy part to replace.

can someone define "light strikes" for me?... does this mean the firing pin does not contact the primer hard enough to fire the round? :confused5

That's my understanding of it. Or if it DOES strike the primer and it detonates, it's a very light indentation on the primer, meaning it could in the future not strike it hard enough to go bang.

thanks, wth my taurus millennium pro, it has a "second strike capability" due to it being a DA/SA. to date i've never encountered this problem, but from what i understand this is a good feature.
