I bought my first AK during Katrina, because the gun and ammo were both cheap. I built the other two right afterward, because I had plenty of cheap ammo for them, and $200 ain't bad for something that's decent for defending your home from roaming gangs (they evacuated quite a few of the N.O. criminals to my city).
My SKS is a better rifle than any of them, and still isn't the cream of the crop.
The advantage is that all of these weapons share the same ammo, and my family and friends are easily armed if necessary.
The post-katrina events showed us all that we could need more than handguns on a moment's notice.
