Colt Question

#1

Post by JLaw »

What's the skinny on the newer Colt Series 80 1991's? I've seen two at my range lately, just over $700.00, they feel as though to be put together very well, but I haven't researched them much.

Good well made gun's, accurate right out of the box, some shooters will want a trigger job. I don't think is necessary.

New Colt's

#3

Post by cxm »

The new Colts vary wildly in quality...some are good, but some are terrible... if you get a terrible one you are in trouble as Colt's service isn't great.

In recent years, any Colt 1911 type I have bought has had to have considerable gunsmith work to make is relible for carry and comfortable to shoot.

For a bit less money you can get a S&W 1911 that is reliable, well made and has lots of features as compared to the Colts.... and you get the best warranty in the industry.

All of my S&W 1911 types have been good enough to carry out of the box.

FWIW

Do a search for 1991 in the Colt forum at http://www.1911forum.com

I've never had one but I haven't heard any horror stories.
I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961

For a bit less money, you sure? I thought the basic Smith 1911's ran around the $900.00 range, and the Colts at this store were just over $700.00. Please advise on if Smith makes a 1911 in this price range, because I agree with you on the fact that you get the best warranty in the business. Smith makes an excellent product.

I've seen the basic S&W 1911 (108285) in the $695 range. I highly recommend the S&W.

The basic SW1911 is $696.21. You can order from them or see if your local guy will price match.

That's do-able once I get around to selling my Glock. I'm a Smith fan also, just thought the SW1911 was out of my price range. Do you, or anyone else here own one? Any reports?

i carried two colt 1991s and a double eagle for years on duty. i liked them all, but i won't buy another. i see absolutely no reason to pay $700 for a $550 gun. and colt customer service is the worst in the industry.

Now I know where the people who used to work at Kel-Tec went.

I carry a 4.25" SW1911PD. Very good gun. Fully functional as is. Night sights would be a nice addition though.

Good to hear it, Photoman. Got the Glock up for sale tonight. I'll be looking for a SW1911 when it sells.
