Ammo shortage in Austin...

#1

Post by Gracegarden »

My DH and I have visited Academy and Walmart. There is either a two box limit (without enough boxes) or they are totally out.
We're looking for 9mm and 40cal. Is this going to change soon? Or is it a sign of the times?

We can't do enough range practice because of the ammo, or lack of...and we're still really new to our guns. (We've done about 300 rounds on each gun)

Glock 19
Springfield XD
Walther PPS 40cal.

I do not see it changing in the near future. People who would normally not buy ammo are now hoarding. I saw about 15-20 boxes of the 9mm WWB 100 count the other day with a 6 box limit. If you ever make trips to Houston I could buy some for you the next time I see some, I will charge you whatever I pay for it (i.e. no profit for me). I thought about buying some but I didn't know if I could sell it or not. I tried selling some of the 45 I bought but nobody was interested so I gave up on trying to make money reselling ammo.

I and many others certainly know what you mean. I just checked about 4 of my usual online sites and could only find some golden saber .40 SW --but that stuff is a bit pricey to feed your shooters often with.

Have you been keeping tabs on Cabela's in Buda? I was in Austin for a concert and stopped there Friday on the way back. I dare say it's hit and miss with what they have on the shelves. One thing is for sure.... .223 up the wahzoo. About .52 a round (ugh I know). Remington UMC (55gr and 45gr) 50 rd packs as well. Almost picked up a GP100 but realized I have barely enough .357 to feed the other 'kids' :cryin .... sigh

I'll have to check Cabella's. I rarely ever go that direction...I forget it exists! ;-)

McBride's and both locations of Red's are doing OK with ammo too. Red's always AT LEAST has target ammo in any caliber to shoot on the range. And often has surplus to sell for you to take home too. McBride's had plenty of 40 and 9mm when I was there last week - but only a few boxes of .38, which is what I was looking for.

Mrs RiverRat has been calling Academy daily with some success. Also got five boxes of .45 at Walmart last weekend, just by chance. She was there and asked on a hunch. The ammo wasn't on the self, but the man looked at the inventory. Of course, we went to Lone Star Range last weekend and used it on the 3 guns we haven't broken in yet  .

I feel your pain. We have been trying to break in a couple of guns without digging into the stash. It's been hard. The hard part with the new guns is trying get a feeling for them.......point of aim, etc.

If you are looking for .40 and 9, I'll be glad to give you a head's up if we find some. Haven't been to Red's in a while, but McBride's had target, limited to two boxes a caliber.
