Ammunition at Saxet Gun show, Austin

I attended the Saxet Gun Show in Austin on Sunday this weekend. I noticed a lot of pistol ammunition was available. In past months at the same show, it was all gone early by Saturday.

I did notice the prices were much higher than Academy or Wal-Mart, if you can find it there. I saw some .380 for $48 per box.

For the last 2 weeks Academy in Round Rock had over 20 boxes of some Winchester NATO 147 grain "overpressure" 9mm. It sat there on the shelf (with the Monarch and Blazer 9mm) while any WWB or any other 9mm would be gone in hours. I stopped by Academy on Saturday and all the 147 grain was gone. Coincidentally (?) I saw some at the gun show for the first time for double the price Academy had it.

Does this mean we have reached the peak of ammo sales? Have the prices gotten so high from gouging that people have stopped buying? Is everybodies safe already full?

There was a gun show this weekend here in Amarillo. I saw a couple of tables with 380fmj for over $50/box. 1 table had it for 60 and he sold out on Saturday.

I came back Sunday and sold 6 boxes for $40/box. Used that money and bought a Savage/Stevens in 308.

I didn't load a few thousand rounds this weekend but I AM NOT going to buy overpriced ammo. If everyone would quit running around like Chicken Little screaming the sky is falling and buying all the handgun ammo in sight, there would be no shortage and the prices would return to some degree of normalcy...just like gasoline and diesel did.

Get real, neither you nor I can HORDE enough handgun ammo to stave off an assault by the local/state police, National Guard and/or the 82nd Airborne. So, why are we doing this to each other? In the immortal words of POGO, "I have seen the enemy and it is us". Let's quit HORDING the ammo and let supply and demand return the item to normal.

I've got a few bullets and a hose pipe, bring on the flame throwers.

Haven't been to a gun show in a while, but attended The Real Gun Show at the Pasadena Convetion Center this weekend. What ammo there was, was outragously priced. A buck a piece for 45 target stuff is insane. These people are shamefull profiteers no different that someone who jacks up the prioce of plywood just before a hurricane. I fantasy hoped (means not really) some of them got flooded out and all their stuff ruined on the way home from the show. The price of almost all firearms was also up significantly. I noticed that Glock magazines that you could pick just about anywhere for $19 were $29, or more, at most tables. That is a 50% increase on the mere possibility that some type of assualt weapons ban may be put in place some time in teh future. I hate to see what would happen if congress actually presented such legislation to the annointed one. I am starting to that some democrats, Omama and Pelosi included don't want a new assualt weapons ban. Some of the statements they have made of late, lead me to believe that are starting to understand what kind of damage it did to their party in the past. Either way, I think we may see a rubber band effect, in that sooner or later peopele will either run out of money to purchase all of this stuff, or will have acquired what they think is a sufficient supply, at about the same time all of these back orders catch up with retailers. When that happens, prices should fall back to only a little above what they were and possibly even under. I have heard ALL of the major manufactires have ramped up and that stuff has to go somewhere when the supply line starts backing up. We saw this happen with gasoline within the last 12 months. All of this has made me realize that probably the best firearms purchase I ever made was an Advantage Arms .22 conversion kit for my Glock and one for my 1911. I can still get 550 rounds for under $20 at Wally World.

Bubba Sanders, owner of Bullseye Supply LLC, in Brandon, Miss., said he has "a number of doctor clients whose financial advisers have told them to invest in ammunition. Beats the hell out of money markets and CDs. You can double your investment in ammunition in a year."

There is a simple solution. But simple doesn't mean easy.

If you think somebody is price gouging on guns or ammo, boycott and shun them. Now and next month and next year and the year after that. Whether it's a local store or an online retailer or your buddy or some guy on ebay. Don't buy from them now. Don't buy from them ever. Well maybe if they have huge discounts at their going out of business sale.

If you have a buddy who is feeding the frenzy and you condone his price gouging because he's a friend then you deserve no sympathy when it happens to you.

Last time I drove by the Saxet show in Austin the lot was FULL, and people were parking on the grass out front along Lamar.

** ammo is outrageous - you can still find better deals online and when available - Wal-Mart or Academy has better pricing.

** EBR's are way out of line as well as AK's

** All you get is frustration, long lines and headaches ... to walk around and see all of the Sham Wow (Not So Wow) sales guys, the beef jerky tables, the tall tales of wanabe Viet Vets telling outrageous stories (no offense to the REAL VETS) and the smell of roasted nuts...

All that and 7 bucks of wasted money - wishing that you should have stayed home and saved time, money and effort by buying from a trusted fellow CHL - FTF.

I enjoyed the show. The biggest issue I see with the Austin show is that it is run every month so it is rather stagnate.

I go here in Amarillo because there is not much in the way of dealers. We have Academy, Gander Mountain, and 3 mom and pop stores.

Gun shows are great for me because I can handle a firearm before I buy. Here, you have to order it and if you don't like it, you get the privilege to pay a "restocking fee".

THANK you, this is exactly the realization that I have come to lately, but better worded. If my home is ever set upon by the New World Order Global Community Police, and it comes time to make use of the few boxes of ammo I've got stored, it wouldn't really matter if I had one box or ten boxes...I wouldn't really have the option to use them all. For after the first box gets opened and used, I had better have some fake passports and a private jet, or a country cabin that's off the grid. So I choose to store only one box for my End of the World scenarios, and keep only as much extra as I plan to shoot at the range in the near future (since it's usually cheaper to buy in advance than at said range).

But yeah, this hoarding nonsense drives me crazy, too! What's a little guy like me to do, who simply wants a few boxes here and there for practice, but oh wait, nothing's available?!!

Free market works both ways. They can charge what ever they like. You, me, can refuse to buy it. It's not like they have us over a barrel like the gasoline companies with a commodity that we need on a daily basis.

I've heard stories, unknown if true, about gun shops going to Walmart when a shipment arrives and buy every box of pistol ammo with the intention to resell if for an much inflated price. If everyone agreed with my thought on the matter, those people would have a large inventory of ammo for a long time because I wouldn't buy it.

Capitalism is a wonderful thing. So is free will and freedom of choice.
