Fredericksburg

I have a few days off this week and I am going to take my wife to Fredericksberg so we can sight-see, do some shopping,and stay the night(actually she will be shopping and i will be following her around). She LOVES shopping even if she doesnt buy anything.
Doesnt matter, if she's happy then I'm happy. Now marriage is a 50-50 deal or is it 90-10 her way? Even so I get to check out 1 gun store for every 10 clothing/antique/whatever shops, right?????

I knew you would agree, any places to check out? Not looking for anything in paticular, just like to look. Now if I walk in on the day someone gets a primer shipment!!!!!!!!!!! Look out!!!

Cimarron Firearms Co. is in Fredericksburg and they operate an outlet store called Texas Jacks. While your wife is looking at their women's clothing, you could check out their six-shooters and rifles.

Fredericksburg is a mecca for yuppie/city type trinket shoppers (my wife used to manage to get me to take her 2-3 times per year), but there is a few real pearls there if you look. The number one thing is the Nimitz Museum....it's worth two days, both the indoor and outdoor museum. The George Bush (sr) museum wasa still being completed the last time I was there, but it too had some really interesting things. And, the Fredericksburg Brewery Restruant (quisine similar to Appleby's) is worth a visit - particularly if you like brewpub or micro-brewed adult beverages. My fisrt visit there was what inspired me to start home brewing. Also, a little side trip to "Enchanted Rock" should be of interest. One of the most famous Texas Ranger firearms "tests" was made there (revolvers were involved ). A whole lot of very interesting history, particularly early German settler history.

And there are more trinket stores than you will want to be dragged through..that's life.

(oh, and considering the tourist influence and origin of most of the city shop keepers, I wouldn't expet to find a whole lot of gun shop activities)

Breakfast is good, but a Bed N Brewery is better. Free Beer for staying the night. Wife and I went there for our 1 yr anniversary. We had a great time.

Ditto to the Nimitz Museum. Let the wife hunt for trinkets and one can spend a couple days at the museum. Make sure to take the time to read the descriptions by each display.

There are a coulple displays that I would like to bring to everyone's attention. The first has a high ranking Japanese officer stating that a land invasion of the US was never even considered because virtually every US citizen had a gun. It just wasn't worth it to have to face 1000's of snipers. There is also a display that states that the only fully equipped and functional army unit on the west coast on Dec. 7th 1941 was a calvary unit that still trained on horseback.

Without the 2nd ammendment, one can infer from both of those statements that Japan could have very easily captured much of the western seaboard had they had a mind to do so. I'm sure there were enough natural resources for it to be worth it. Had China been able to mount a more effective defense, the Japanese probably would have wanted to. Good thing China has no 2nd ammendment.

The George Bush museum is now closed for renovations and I don't know for how long. The old one was pretty nice.

If it can be done, try to plan your trip around when they do re-enactments. I was lucky enough to be able to take my family to one last summer at the 4th of July. They have virtually all of the small arms that were used and they have a fully functional restored Sherman tank and one smaller tank who's designation escapes me. They demonstrate all of the small arms and then they reinact the taking of a pillbox complete with flamethrower. The heat from that flamethrower is still intense 100' away.

They do provide earplugs which are definately needed.

I don't know about any gun shop in FBG. The Wall Mart still sells guns and has a pretty good collection of rifles and shotguns. You know, like they used to do at all of them? I've not seen that Cimarron store that was mentioned in a previous post. I'll have to look for it on my next trip up there.

I actually grew up in the area and go to visit mom as much as I can so I'm up that way several times a year.

Yea, the LBJ ranch is a good look as well. The Saur-Beckman farm is fun. The people working there are in period costumes and operate it as they did in 1900. Everything they have can be found in the Sears-Roebuck catalog from that time. They even have some items there that can be found in the catalog that they have. The workers cook lunch everyday from food from that farm. Unfortunately, the only people that can eat it are the workers themselves but believe me, it's gooooood.

If you bring your kids, the ladies always try to get them to gather the chicken eggs. If I never have to gather another egg as long as I live, that would be great but my kids get a kick out of it.

That does sound familiar. It is very cool to hear those things in action even though they were shooting blanks with a light load

Thanks for all the replies. I ended up going to the Nimitz museum plus some shopping. We didnt have much time. We plan to go back since we dont live far (100mi). I want to see the re-enactment at the museum.

its owner would have a place to drink.

As far as I know, there is no "center" to the town. There are several buildings scattered about a grove.
There is a music building for performances. There is a store where you can buy T-shirts and such, but it is so
small you will get claustrophobia.

There are license plates from all over the US nailed up around the property. The
day we went there was an impressive number of Harleys and other motorcycles.

After you have visited it you will light up with a big smile whenever you hear the song.

FYI, the main building has a post office and a 51% bar.
