Maryland is one of the worst states for handgun ownership and carrying. The Bradys rank Maryland the 5th best: http://www.stategunlaws.org/viewstate.php?st=MD" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Maybe the guy thought it was legal to carry a handgun in Texas. A lot of people who have never been here think that we all wear cowboy boots and six-shooters.

Maybe he just thought he could get away with carrying illegally.

Only he knows, unless someone here can read minds.

I've lived in Bell County my whole life with the exception of 4 month stretch in Cali about 6 years ago....whew, good to be home. I've also worked in and around LE in Bell County since 2001 and my prediction is that he will walk. The DA here will not take a case that he is not just darned near 110% positive he will win. The big thing here has been meth and other drug charges. The shooting of a vicious dog, a pitt bull of all breeds, is not high on the no-no list in this area right now, as numerous young children have been mauled and some killed as of recently. The "Discharge Firearm in City Limits" charge might make, since he was dumb enough to talk and say he fired a warning shot, but if he gets a decent defense attorney, he'll plea bargain it down to a nothing crime.

Now, on to why he thought he could carry without a license....it's Killeen. For those who are not familiar with the city, I don't go within 10 miles of that city without a press check and adjusting my firearm to make SURE I can draw quickly. The crime in that city is higher than a pot-head in a marijuana forrest fire! Not to mention that most of the people are packing illegally, I would assume that the gentleman in question may have noticed this trend and assumed it was a legal act. There are basically four types of people in that city, listed in order of percentage of population: Soldiers, criminals, retail sales/customer service workers, and city employees. There are also those that fall into two categories, ie: sodliers who are also criminals, city workers who are also criminals, retail sales people who are also criminals...do we see a common thread here? I don't blame the guy for packing or shooting the dog, I think he was stupid for not researching the laws first, I think he was stupid for firing a warning shot, and for admitting it to the police, but I think he'll be okay.

By that reasoning, he must have carried a gun when he lived in Maryland and at least two guns when he went into DC.

Maryland is like a lot of states, where one city, Baltimore, is a cesspool of crime and villainy; and the rest of the state is a peaceful, pleasant place to live.

When I was in Baltimore last fall, we were driving around with another family with us (8 of us total) and my wife wanted to stop in a certain part of town. I parked the car on the street and then we began walking back towards wherever it was they wanted to go. My wife then asked me to go put something back in the car, so I walked back, had a funny feeling as I rounded the corner, but I put the item back in the car and locked it, started walking back to catch up with the fam and as soon as I turned the corner I found myself walking right into the middle of a drug deal in progress.

G-rreat.

I just walked on through. Nothing more you could do!

I agree with Killeen being a really bad town. I was stationed there and I just hated it. I left every single weekend and drove all the way to College Station. When I would come back I would always get depressed when turning off of I-35 onto 190. There is a sign that says Killeen/Ft. Hood exit. It made me want to cry most of the time.

I agree also that there is a bad problem with pit bulls in the city. A lot of soliders seem to love them and I'm sure there are dog fights out in the country. I would bet lunch that this guy ran into some dog that was being raised mean and just to fight. I just can't begin to tell you how many of those dogs were all over that town.
