Here is another article from the San Antonio Express-News on Perry's view of this decision:

http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/state/ ... y_nod.html

What I found most interesting was this identified but un-named politician's statement:

"The chairman of the House Law Enforcement Committee said he plans to introduce legislation next year to allow concealed weapons at colleges and universities."

I would guess we have found a volunteer to clarify the definition of what a school is.

VERNON (Special) —
He said Burkburnett school officials came to look at Harrold’s system and adopted same security system for their buildings..

course, being a Burk alum, shouldn't I say "prouder?"
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.

Once you get above the Local level, union reps seldom advocate for the memberships. Get more than two levels removed from the Local, and they're usually working for their political handlers.

And I say this as a long-time union officer.
KB, Gayle Fallon is the president of her local. (It's a big local, but still a local.) I expect better teacher representation from her.
I do appreciate your comments, however, especially considering that you have experience with unions.

The discussion got me thinking: Lots of antis have been complaining about the Heller decision, saying that states and cities should have the "right" to ban weapons. Too bad they don't see the flip side: localities have the power to allow their citizens to do what they see best for their own welfare.

I saw him today on Fox news. He was articulate, well reasoned and had ready answers to all questions.

At the end of the interview one of the newscasters looked at the other and exclaimed "He had some good points". The other NC couldn't help but agree.

By virtue of his position and the fact that they are the first district that has enacted this sort of policy, he has become our ambassador to the press/public for concealed carry in "sensitive" areas like schools.

It looks like we got lucky and got someone who can do a good job of projecting a positive image.

I am very happy with the way this has gone so far.

Just so you know, Mr Thweatt answered my email.

My letter:

Mr. Thweatt,

History is marked with the occaisional individual whose actions define truth and logic in a truly chaotic mess we often refer to as "life".

You, sir are one of those individuals.

I wish you strength, endurance, determination, and steadfastness in what is surely to be a trying hour in your quest to take what are the only certain and sure steps to protect the children, faculty, and staff of your district.

May God bless you and yours, and I will most certainly remember you when I speak to the Lord.

Please, allow me to humbly request that if there is anything that I myself, or any of my right thinking, second amendment and constitution loving brothers and sisters can do to support your cause, do not hesitate to let me know. We are vast in number and at your disposal.

Respected Regards,

His response:

It is I, Anygun, who is humbled by your words of praise and encouragement. Thank you for the prayers, and especially thank you for serving our country and defending my freedoms. I will continue to interview and speak up for our district and all that have contacted me with words of encouragement. I’ll be on FOX and Friends in the morning, and the Glenn Beck program on CNN on Tuesday.

God bless you,

David Thweatt

Below is a copy of the E mail I sent to Mr. Thweatt and his reply, which I just recieved:

From: Boesche, Timothy
Sent: Thursday, August 21, 2008 7:25 AM
To: david.thweatt@esc9.net
Subject: Offering support

Superintendant Thweatt,

I just wanted to take a moment of your time and offer you my support. I believe that you are a man of vision and have taken a great step in protecting your students. I believe firmly in the 2nd amendment and an INDIVIDUALS right to carry a firearm. I commend you sir in your decision to allow your staff to do so on campus. I understand the difficulty you had in making this decision, and respect the fact that you made a decision that may not be accepted by some of the parents in your district. Still you made a choice based on what you believe. Well Done! I am a CHL holder myself, but even if I were not, I would commend you on this choice. Believe me when I tell you that there are many that respect and support your decisions. I am a member of the Texas CHL forum and we are having a lengthy discussion about this. If you would care to check it out please click this link. http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_F ... &sk=t&sd=a

We would be honored if you would pay us a visit.

Again, THANK YOU

Tim Boesche

His reply-

Timothy:

I wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know how much I appreciate your email and encouragement. It has meant a lot to have so many concerned citizens from across Texas and America contact me to let me know that we’re heading in the right direction. Obviously, I knew within my heart (and mind) that Harrold ISD was making the right decision, but it always helps to know that one small school district in Texas is not alone in its fight. I’ve been pretty busy with the media coverage, but I believe that it may be slowing down a bit. I have also come to believe the fight is just beginning. I want to encourage you to continue to contact your legislators so that laws will be enacted to ensure that every American will be able to practice his or her 2nd Amendment rights. By the way, thanks for the link. I was encouraged by the messages.

God bless America and God bless you,

David Thweatt

I have a question regarding this issue, but before I pose it, please realize that I fully support the decision by the School Board and Superintendent.

My question is this:

If the Feds have declared Schools to be "Gun-free zones", how can the district allow them? Did the federal law or regulation allow exemptions?

Yes. CHL holders are exempt from the federal "gun-free school zone." There are some fine points, like you have to have a license from the state where you reside, and you are exempt only in the state where you reside.
