G17 or Springfield 1911..Thinking of buying..

#1

Post by Reysc »

I know there are lots of 1911 affectionados on this forum so any advise or opinions will be appreciated.
I'm thing of buying a G17 ( currently I have the a G26, P-89,snubby .38. Taurus .357) and I'm quite familiar with it. Now I show this add
http://glocktalk.com/showthread.php?s=& ... ost6046749

and started hmmmmm.... I'm not that familiar w/ the 1911s. I know they are .45s and great stopping power, that's all.. What would I use it for, Target shooting, toy?... Maybe carry if situation warrants???
What do you think??
Thanks in advance for your time!!

You can use a 1911 for all. Carry, target shooting, using it in matches, etc... What you may want to do is go out there and see if you can either borrow a friends or rent one to shoot. It's a bit different than a Glock. There are safeties you have to disengage, The grip angle is a bit different as well. If you are used to the grip angle on a Glock, your front sight will be low. See how you like it and then decide. Good luck on your decisions. That is one fine looking modded milspec.

Thanks for your reply and the heads up Kinny Lee! I grew up from a beautiful county in the Pacific where Gen Douglas McArthur said " I shall Return" and did. People there are fond of the GI 1911. I've tried quite a few already and yes. different from the glocks handlingwise ( maybe that's why I like the glocks..LOL) but that would not stop me from owning one... BTW, is that milspec already modded so it would not eat the web between my thumb and triggerfinger ? Or is that a grip issue ?
Thanks again!!!

The seller stated that the hammer, and bushing has been replaced. Also the grip safety has been worked on. Given the contour of the new hammer you may not get hammer bite at all, but looks could be deceiving. The wonderful thing about a 1911 is if you don't like something about it, you can always change it. Same goes for the Glocks too.

I'm most grateful for your time,KinnyLee!!! Thank you so much!!!  ... I also did some research on the springer mil-spec and kind of got a little more knowledge about the gun and the 1911 in general...If the seller emails me back and is available FTF, might buy it today.. ;-) ;-) ... Otherwise, will be shopping around for a good deal on a G17 but definetely a good 1911 is in my wish list!

What makes it pretty is the price (around 500.00) and the number of rounds.

I'm with OEFM. ;-) 45ACP, 13+1, polymer frame, grip safety ala 1911..
Best of both worlds.

XD is actually a very good choice. Glock like built quality and durability with 1911 like pointability and safety.

Thanks ya'll for the great feedbacks... I have my line up ready and might hit the gunshow at Bobtown this p.m. I'm thinking of the following;
1. Glock 17...my first dream..Glock's flagship model IMO..Cheap and fun to shoot.. I have three other handguns in 9mm so might as well buy Blasser in bulk..
2. Glock 21... I like to own a 45 acp......
3. 1911 ....... ditto...
4.Springfield XD in 45 acp...Wow, this gun is awesome! I wonder if they sell it with extras ( holster and mag carrier) at the gunshow. Thanks for posting the pics and everyone's endorsement.

None of the sellers in the other board have returned my emails yet..Sometimes I wonder if they really have something to sell   .l I wll be enjoying this shopping process and I will not rush and maybe come up with a good deal!!

Ya'll have a great day and will update ya'll as to what I will end up with!!

UPDATE..

#15

Post by Reysc »

Just an UPDATE... I bought a new G17 w/ night sites at the gunshow yesterday. I look at some 1911 models and yes, I saw the new XD 45 and a LE model G21. The XD is real nice and the price us $468 + tax but I think I'm more inclined in a traditional 1911. I will be at Target Master this a.m. and play a litltle bit with the new toy and I will see if I can rent a .45..
Thanks..
