Training Classes
Hey guys and gals,
I'm new to this forum, and I'm not sure if anyone has already asked this question. But here goes. Okay, i have my CHL in hand now, and i'm wondering, what more can i do besides going to the range and shooting all day to make me a better shooter, better at handling situations of confrontations like 3 guys coming at me, do i tell them to stop, do i put my hand on my holster under my shirt and yell stop, do i actually draw and yell stop. do i have to make an attempt to "flee".
What I really need is a class, kinda like a boot camp on how to handle these types of situations. and be better prepared. thank you for your help and advice.

Re: Training Classes
Read this thread about minimum training: http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_F ... 23&t=16875
And yes, you should find some defensive shooting class/training. Post your location and people in your area can put you onto good instructors (e.g., Karl Rehn of KRTraining.com is great if you are around SmithVille, i.e., Austin/San Antonio/Houston but there are many other good trainings even if you must travel further.)
Take some training. Shoot some IDPA (or USPSA).
Nothing is going to be combat, but the more realistic you can make it the better prepared you're likely will be.
Stay alert. Stay safe.

Re: Training Classes
since i got my chl i have been taking regular classes just to make sure my knowledge and skills keep ahead or at the least keep up.
the place i've liked the best is KR TRAINING. you can find them by googleing that name.
i would suggest what they call BASIC PISTOL 2 followed by DEFENSIVE PISTOL. karl rehn is the instructor and is a professional security trainer. the classes are located between elgin and giddings. you will get a lot of classroom time in addition to range time with hands on skills correction.
it seems if i ever have to account for using my weapon it would help to be able to say i have continued my education in use of force.
also i second herbm's suggestion to take up ipsa or uspsa. saturday i'm shooting my third uspsa match at bullet hole range in sa. you can't imagine how much fun you will have until you try it.
the bullet hole group is very open to beginners. check it out this saturday morning. see the bullet hole range web site.

You are pretty close to a good Pratical Shooting range with USPSA and IDPA regularly. Cedar Ridge in Bulverde.ed3eclipse wrote:do any of you guys live in my vicinity? maybe we could meet up and practice. if so send me a PM.

Thanks. I didn't know that -- even though I am interest in a glass with Gabe Suarez or perhaps one of his instructors.austin wrote:Check out SI as well. They offer classes in Houston and Tyler.

Re: Training Classes
http://www.tacticalresponse.com/
We both just missed their Fighting Pistol class in Bastrop, but more than likely there will be another one either at the end of 2008 or early 2009. They also offer the Advanced Fighting Pistol, Fighting Rifle/Advanced.
There are other courses offered, but the one I would recommend the most (having read the after-action reports and reviews of the course) is by far Defensive Pistol. It's all about true tactics when engaged in a gun battle, which is why you carry a concealed handgun, to protect yourself and others if it comes to it. Their home base is in Camden, TN, outside of Memphis. If you don't mind flying there and renting a car, they'll bunk you in Yeager's house for free.
Definitely worth looking into.
EDIT: Also, for you I would highly recommend joining http://texastactical.net/ and do IDPA shoots. It's in Bulverde north of you and they do tactical movement and such. I think the range will also allow it during non-IDPA, but I'm not sure. If I wasn't living north of Austin, I would go there for sure!

Another recommendation for K R training!

Re: Training Classes
Karl doesn't have any intermediate or AT classes on his schedule at the moment, but it's worth checking back occasionally. He is a good instructor and has a lot to teach, no matter whether you're a neophyte or old hand. He occasionally hosts nationally known instructors at his range as well.HerbM wrote:And yes, you should find some defensive shooting class/training. Karl and Penny are also genuinely nice people.

Re: Training Classes
And whenever they offer their Basic (or Women's Basic) they are especially good with helping women or anyone who is afraid a "gun class" will be too macho -- they teach safety and the basics of shooting very efficiently and in a very friendly manner.bayouhazard wrote:Karl doesn't have any intermediate or AT classes on his schedule at the moment, but it's worth checking back occasionally. Sometimes these (short) classes are in the city, e.g., Austin.
