Some snakes have definitely un-hibernated

Yesterday turned out to be "snake day" in scouting a promising new lease west of Archer City. Between 4 of us, we got a rattler and 3 confirmed kills on water mocs. All with handguns and solid projectiles.

The rattler was "tag teamed", so to speak. It startled city-boy huntin' buddy Ken bigtime when it began rattling and coiled up into strike mode about 12' feet away. He sprayed and prayed at it with at least 10 rounds from his Glock 22. I had my new Glock 29 out in low ready position and was putting the safety block in my left pocket when Ken paused long enough to let the dust settle, then looked over at me.

The 5' snake still had it's head up about 12", moving it back and forth, showing us his fangs. I looked over at Ken and said "Do you want me to shoot it now?", then popped it in the head with the second shot of 135 grain screamers from Double Tap. When Ken's adreneline finally stopped pumping and he began to reload his magazine, he looked over and said "Smart ***!"

Counted 17 "rattles" on the tail, plus another bead just started. Cut it off to hang on office wall next to pheasant tailfeathers.

3 out of 4 of us had on snake boots and/or chaps. The 4'th guy (another semi-city boy) said he's going to own some before he goes out there again.

Nothing will wake a person up better than the familiar rattle of a rattlesnake. You either freeze in your tracks or run like all get out (or in this case spray and pray). :D

Greybeard, you gonna make the G29 your carry gun or is it going to be a hunting partner??

The 29 shaping up to be a "sometimes" carry gun for the concrete jungle as well for hunting. Realistically, once "shorts weather" arrives, I will probably go right back to S&W 340 for daily carry.

Still working on/experimenting with "details" for the 29. Got a "customized" IWB holster supposed to be ready at Lewisville Old Town leather shop tomorrow. And a .40 S&W Bar-Sto "semi drop-in" barrel for it that's gotta go down to Doc Jones in Carrollton for some "fitting". By the next trip out to Archer City, I hope to have a magazine loaded with CCI shot loads. Have found 'em in .40, but not 10mm ...

The 29 (or more likely the 20) is on my "wish list" of guns to have. I'd love to have a 10 mm. I think my next purchase will be the Glock 27 though....even though I don't really like it (grip too small). I want something small that can serve as a pocket gun for church (or other times when carrying a full size Glock is hard to manage) as well as a back up gun if desired...and the 27 seems to be the logical choice since I already have a 22.

Braden -

FWIW, almost everyone I know (men anyway) who have a Glock 26 or 27 wind up putting an extender of one type or another on 'em if they want a place for the pinkie. With the popular +2s, I think it actually makes 'em longer and bulkier than the Model 29 with the Pearce +0 (which is just right in my hand - and no "excess" in holster).

Per http://glockmeister.com/gpistols.shtml, compared to the 27, the 29 is roughly just 1/2" longer, 1/3" taller and 1/10" wider. But 2.7 ounces heavier. :(

Well Bubba, I was wrong on the length. Got pictures processed and the thing looks closer to 66". Hope that doen't make the knees start shakin' again.

I actually owned a G27 at one time and I sold it to my former boss. Like most everyone else that has them, I had the extender on there (Pearce) so my pinky would have a place to rest. If I had known at that time that I'd be getting a G22 then I never would have sold it. It's still not my favorite Glock, but since my primary carry gun is the G22 then the 27 makes the most sense as a back up gun (same caliber, 27 can take 22 mag, etc).

By the way....66" is one BIG rattler!!
