If you have fire ants in your area, you have a very low snake population. You also have a low rabbit, lizard, quail, etc... population.

All the fire ants on my deer lease must not have received the memo on eating snakes. We usually kill over 20 water moccasin each year before bow season.

I have heard some stories from Florida about mythic battles between pythons and alligators. It apparently is a tossup as to which ones win and sometimes they both end up dead.

OK!!!! This thread has given me a serious case of the heebie jeebies!!!! The only good snake is a dead snake! I got that e-mail with the giant snake in the electric fence. The e-mail said it was on an oil lease somewhere in Africa. Is that true, or just another internet e-mail goof?

According to snopes.com it is true.

http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/fencesnake.asp

That is the meanest, nastyest looking snake I have ever seen.

Wonder what a .40 S@W round would do to it?

I just looked at the link on snopes, and checked out the Silent Valley web site. If there were a smiley for a "full body shiver" I would insert it right there!! Snakes and spiders are the two animals that just freak me out. You can't trust anything with 8 legs or no legs!!

They've lost their guns (most of 'em anyway), so what else can they do but throw plastic chairs and bleat like sheep?

Perhaps the Water Moccasins still flourish because fire ants tend to avoid water. They need moist soil but but stay away from standing water. Water Moccasins give birth to live, fully functional small snakes and those snakes stay near water. Not a snake expert here but that may be why you see them more.

I know in the Texas Hill country, rattle snakes are much rarer than they used to be. It was a rule that I would come across large king snakes on a regular basis and I haven't seen one of those monsters of any size since I was a kid.

Anyway, Pythons are not going to overrun anything.

Well I reckon I'll be getting one as a pet when I get back. Always liked snakes for some reason.
