HI you all I am writing from laredo, texas and we have an academy here locally. Seems to be that they only ammo readily available for revolvers is the monarch ammo. My question to you all is does anyone here have any experience with monarch ammo in 38 special and 357 magnum both in jhp? I would appreciate your input by the way it is the green box that i am interested in thank you.

I use the 9mm Greenbox all the time. I use it for my IDPA matches. Never had a problem with it.

I have noticed that they are slightly dirtier than Winchester white box. I have had to spend more time cleaning the gun. Other than that, they are a pretty good value. I did have a "dud" round one time. For a second or two I actually thought my gun was broken.coronel wrote:HI you all I am writing from laredo, texas and we have an academy here locally. Thanks a lot for the input you all have written. It is a big help for me to decide on the monarch ammo. Now another question is; us it good for personal protection?

I dont know about the.38 or .357 but I have put about 2800rds of 9mm threw my cz Rami with not one problem,
except having to clean it after every range session.
I dont use it for my carry I use 147 gr JHP's reloads from a reliable source.

It's a revolver, it will shoot anything.
My Taurus PT24/7 9mm does not like Monarch, They fail to eject for some reason, so I had to switch to the cheaper CCI Blazer ammo. Dang the bad luck.

I wouldn't use them for personal protection. That is just something I do no pinch pennies on. I use Hydra-Shoks in my .357.coronel wrote:Thanks a lot for the input you all have written. Dan20730 asked to post a reply if I happened to try the monarch 38 special and 357 magnum in hollow point respectfully. Well Dan I bought some at academy tried them out. Both of them were pretty accurate good tight grouping out of my Ruger security six and Police
Security Six both in four inch barrels. Must have burned around 250 rounds of each caliber mentioned. Fired into paper at seven, ten and 15 yards there were pretty tight groups were obtained. Fired at some two gallon water jugs and the jugs exploded like their was some hydra shock effect. The bullet went thru the jug with the jug giving off an exploding effect. The exit of the bullet was just slight bigger then the entrance. This was with the 357 magnum hollow point 158 gr. When I shot the 38 special 158 grain their wasnt an explosion if you will just an entrance and an exit. I tried it against the federal 125 grain and boy what a violent reaction to the water jugs. Didnt compare at all. Then I fired remington wally world green and white box 38 special hollowpoint plus p. Their was also some kind of violent reaction with the water jugs not as much as with the 357 magnum federal 125 grain. I tried writing this as objectively as possible to help anyone decide on their own the different effects of the different ammo mentioned. One thing I can tell you I had no misfires with the Monarch ammo. The 357 in Monarch was just about as punchy as the federal that is felt recoil. The difference in the 38 specials the Monarch was a bit wimpy compared to the Remington 125 plus -p.

Coronel - While shooting at jugs filled with water is fun, it is not a good way to test the effectiveness of a self defensive round. That is, unless you're being attacked by water-jug zombies.
Monarch is fine for practice, but for your self defense ammo, go with Gold Dot, Hydra Shok or something that is specifically made for that purpose. Search this forum and there are plenty of threads on proper defense rounds. You may have to go to some store other than Academy. Find out where your local PD buy their ammunition.

Thanks for the post on your experience with the ammo. I think I'll be picking some up now for practice.
The 125 grain .357 magnum wasn't called the "magic bullet" by many LEOs for nothing. The ballistics and performance of that round makes it great for SD. Water jugs don't stand a chance!
Like WildBill stated, get some good quality ammo for carry. Federal, Winchester and Remmington all make very good 125 grain HP ammo in .357 magnum.
