Home Range

Post by bauerdj »

I am wondering if there are any problems with me setting up a private range on my own property. While I enjoy going to the public range near me there are many times when I just want to shoot a few rounds and it is not worth the effort of driving to the range. I live on 5 acres of property ouside the city limits of Conroe. I know it is legal to shoot on ones own property here, many people hunt on their own property. Obviously proper saftey measures would need to be taken to prevent a stray round from leaving the property. I am wondering what other problems might be lurking. Sure would be nice to be able to just go out the back door to test a new gun out!

Noise

Noise complaints from any nearby neighbors are a potential issue.

I recall a while back that there was a person living in a house nearby the local range. All of the land was in the county. Daytime complaints werent a serious issue, but nighttime use of the range was limited. Once the person moved, extended evening hours were made available.

I've considered building a small range on my property. I've got some dirt work to get done out there this year so I may get the 'dozer guy to push up some dirt berms.

I believe the NRA offers a range building guide-- good for some ideas.

You should check with your county but unless the bullet travel beyond your property or you violates a noise ordinance you are probably ok. Twenty years ago my Real Estate Management Company was renting a group of fourplex townhouse in Garland Texas. A tenant shot into the dirt in his backyard with a .357 revolver. My onsite manager called the police. Upon arrival they informed her they didn’t hear the noise so couldn’t site him for a noise violation and there was no city ordinance against his action as the bullet didn’t leave his property. We were advised to add a prohibition to our standard lease to take care of this situation. At that time there was still too much rural land in Garland for the city to have shooting restrictions. YMMV

Oh, they said if he had been shooting fireworks and they could locate debris, that would be a violation they could enforce

Out of respect for neighbors I would restrict use of range to day and early evening, so unless there is a day sleeper near me that shouldn't be an issue. Probably would not go through more then 50 rounds at a time either so it wouldn't be for a long period.

Thanks for the suggestion on the NRA, I will have to check that out.

I live in the country and am surrounded by pasture. The occasional gunshot is not only proper, but expected.javascript:emoticon('')

You also need to check the relevant state law. I believe there was a law passed this past year that pertains.
Real gun control, carrying 24/7/365
