Re: Shotgun by the door / ready condition?
I cant remember for sure but Jeff talked about a oh its some Italian word but it boils down to a Hammer fired double barrel shotgun. You could load it and cover the muzzle with a light weight cloth bag. The hammer springs would be stored with no tension so it would work 100 years later. Now this was when hammered doubles were cheap and made cheap. I never got it I was a young military guy there learning the 1911 and rifle work my boss wanted me to learn from this nut. yeah I know I was young but I did learn a lot. Im here arnt I...

If it were me, I would get rid of the wasps and daubers first then worry about the shotgun

Re: Shotgun by the door / ready condition?
I know that I am probably OCD, but I will never have any gun that would ever have an opportunity to aquire mud daubers. I keep two guns within easy reach if I am awakened in the middle of the night. One is my EDC carry pistol, and the other is my Mossberg 12 gauge. I keep them cleaned and ready to use. I don’t rely on anything that would sit long enough for wildlife to interfere with my ability to defend me and mine. YMMV I keep my powder dry, and my SD weapons at the ready. If you are looking for something to stay ready for years at at a time, with no maintenance, you are not really not planning for having to use it. JMHO

I am curious about something. Do any of you folks lock up or hide your home defense weapons when you leave the house? I think about this at times. It would be awful for a criminal to break into my home and then have ready access to one of my weapons for when the police respond or even worse, I come walking in the front door.

Just store it barrel down.
Gun control is like stopping drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to drive.

Re: Shotgun by the door / ready condition?
Mud daubers have been reduced by about 75%. I used glue traps with a lot of success. I also have been knocking down their clumps every couple of weeks. (Too much time on my hands.) I am probably overly concerned because of a heirloom rifle damaged in the 1950's.
I am a semi-auto enthusiast. I have one pump shotgun but it was my dad's. I will not be using it for home protection.
There are guns around the house. None would be seen in a casual inspection. When we have gatherings, the loaded guns are stowed, in case of curious guests.
My normal condition, is either completely unloaded or ready to fire when the bang switch is pressed. Only my deer rifle is stowed with chamber empty and rounds in the magazine.
My spouse is competent around guns but sometimes has issues with loading. I have practiced loading 4 at a time. (I mentioned 3-gun competitions.) When I set up the shotgun, it will be loaded with safety engaged.
Lot's of good ideas. Thank you.
