I would surely love to see the make, model, and serial number engraved on a firing pin.

It won't be in so many words, more like a hieroglyphic pattern of markings that can be decoded to reveal the make, model, and SN.

I have seen the article and have been conversant with bar codes, scatter codes and such since before Ronald Reagan didn't know what they were, but it's still a lot of bits of information to encode in a very small place, and then there's wear and tear to consider, among other things.

So looking at a description of the technology, they use laser engraving. It seems like an easy technology to defeat using some sort of high-strength resin to fill in the engraving.

As was also mentioned, there's nothing to stop anyone from replacing a barrel and firing pin.
Beyond that, these are parts that people need to replace. Maybe barrels and firing pins will get added to the long list of things that cannot be shipped to CA.

The interesting thing will be the response from gun manufacturers.

Will they, or some of them, simply pull out of the CA market?

Glock is on record as stating they will "reconsider marketing it's pistols in California", and SigArms and Smith & Wesson are both on record as "opposed".

THat's alot of change to put into production! Good to see the gun manufactureres taking a stand. This was a terrible move but I'm sure anti-gunners are having a party over it!

I don't think Kel-Tec is building Kalifornia compliant pistols. They do make at least one model of the SU-16 rifle for sale there, but without external safeties, the DAO pistols are off limits. I hope (and think they will) they stand their ground too.

Has it occurred to anyone that CA lawmakers don't really think that gun manufacturers not selling in CA is a problem?

I think they see that as a benefit, really, and believe that it will reduce the number of guns statewide (it won't but they probably think it will).

They have probably either NOT considered how it will impact their LE community or simply don't care, thinking that LE will continue to use the firearms they already have and not worry about replacing them.

It will take someone smarter than me, but it seems any stamping, etching, engraving, or cutting on the surface of a cartridge could prove rather dangerous.
Just how many fonts can dance on a firing pin?
