CHL'ers: What would you do in this scenario?

Another way to look at it is put yourself in an officers shoes. Would an officer wait to be a witness, or act?

Having a CHL does NOT give you the duties of an LEO. They HAVE to intervene when ever possible, as sworn protectors of the peace, we do not!

Like others said there are WAY to many variables to list. If my wife and/or son were outside in the car, I am doing what ever I can to keep him/her from exiting the building, PERIOD.

The clerk hands over some money and the criminal leaves?

That seems to be the most common scenario I see in the news.

The second most common scenario seems to be a clerk fighting back, so I would get out of the clerk's field of fire.
It coincidentally puts the clerk out of my line of fire, if is necessary.

But you have to be careful and know exactly what is happening and not be too quick to shoot. There can be misunderstandings:

There is no misunderstanding a person waiving a gun at a store clerk threatening to kill him.

When we talk about the law requiring you to "reasonably" determine that there is a risk of imminent harm or death to you or someone you see...

Thats the "elementary reaction" part of what I was attempting to convey the other day on this thread...

We are all certainly hyper-aware of being responsible for our actions, but I have always married that concept with the notion thats its good to be prepared to be accountable for our actions...

In no way do I stress that that means to create hesitation or reluctance to act within the parameters of the law...We all have that "personal" line in the sand to how we react to certain situations...

What's really going to cook yer noodle, is that you have pretty much already made the decision in any case...

If I can talk and not be heard by the BG then I will do that. If not, just dont hang up, as 911 will send a police officer to find out what is going on.

I think it would take sometime to locate a cell phone in a large area. I do not believe the Police would find you in time if you did not give an address. I think most often gas stations or 7 elevens are robbed due to the fact they are close to major roads. These places tend to be small and you as a customer will probably not be hidden from the BG's view/attention for long.

I would:

draw weapon, thumb the safety off. Look for other BG's in store, (assuming there are no others) maneuver using cover and wait for a clear shot on BG #1. If clear shot made available, take a center mass shot. If shot not available, get license plate number, good description, observe which direction they fled, etc. How did I do?

Looks like the clerk almost hit that woman and her baby as his muzzel was following and firing at the goon. But he was in a better position to determine that than I am looking through a camera lens at an angle.

The shooter in question was very well-trained and if I recall correctly, was a CCW instuctor (in Ohio, I believe). He made a posting about it over on TFL when it happened a few years ago. He fired 3 rounds and all were good COM hits. He knew how to react with lethal force with the safety of everyone else in mind. The lady and her baby looked to be at nearly a 90-degree angle to his barrel, he controlled his shots and made accurate hits.

I thought he cut it close too, but it appears after the first shot, the BG runs by moving the GG's shot view closer to the woman/child. It appears the GG actually delays firing another round after the first until the woman/kid are more out of the way.

If I had a clear shot, I would draw and fire for effect. If I did not have a clear shot, I would draw, maneuver for a clear shot, and fire for effect.

I'm no hero, but part of the reason I choose to carry a gun is because I'm tired of the BG's winning. My kids are going to have to grow up in this society and I'm not happy about what we are leaving them.

I bet that on reflex, most of us fall into one of two clear categories:

1. draw and fire, and keep firing until the BG is down, then call 911 and look and see whether we hit the good guy

- or -

2. duck and hide, hope the bad guy goes away before he finds you, and pray that you don't have to actually use the gun you are carrying. wait to call 911 until there is no threat or maybe not at all because you don't want the cops to interview you after you peed your pants.

Something tells me all of this reasoned response stuff is just fluff. We are most likely going to react on instinct and reflex. Either we are aggressive or passive. We either advance or retreat. We're an alpha or a beta. I don't believe in the gray areas. Our involvement in this situation is over in 5 seconds. Either we fired, or we hid.

I would take the shot(s) when a good chance presented itself. I could not leave the fate of the Store owner or possibly friends or family outside in the car up to the good graces of the BG.
