IDPA tutor or shooting partner

I am looking to join and become active in the IDPA at the PSC range this year.

I am searching for a tutor and/or shooting partner. Someone to teach me the ropes and help me improve my shooting techniques. I have no desire to "win" any competitions. I just want to prepare myself for any situations which may arise using the equipment I already own. And maybe have some fun in the process.

I am no stranger to guns. Carried in Viet Nam for 17 months. I am older now and cannot see as well as I use to and my reactions are much slower. I know my Martils Art skills are not nearly what they used to be. All the more reason to become efficient with a gun.

Anyone interested or know of anyone who might be.

I'd be happy to work with you Ray. I won't be at the Board meeting this Thursday, but I'll talk to you when I get back to town. I'm actually considering starting an IDPA/Tactical practice group and will be coaching a few folks. In all candor, we will focus far more on tactical shooting than pure IDPA competition, but many of the skills will overlap.

Tell Angel she's welcome to join us. I've been hoping we could get her to shoot IDPA.

I talked to my sensei the other day and he and I would be happy to put on some self defense classes if there is an interest in them. (no charge, of course) We teach: open hand, knifes, canes, sticks, sai, etc.

Seems that may fit in with what you are talking about somewhere. Maybe not, though. Anyway its available if you are interested.

Angel may be interested in shooting IDPA. She is just so shy sometimes. Some guy someday is going to get the shock of his life when he finds out what she is really like on the inside. I pity the person that crosses her thinking they have an easy victim. They may win but they will have their hands full, probably wish they had picked someone else to pick on. Ha.

IMO, there are many MA skills/principles that could be applied to self defense with a handgun, and a good way to augment any skills you already have.

In fact, you are much more likely to need this level of self defense in daily life than having to address one that requires the use of "deadly force".

In a close quarters encounter, some of these skills might be what allows to get to your gun to begin with.

Charles and I have been doing a regular practice session each week for several months. Recently our little group has expanded, and we'd love to see more. I'll talk to you about it Thursday evening at the board meeting if you want. And it would be great to have Angel join in. Might be a good way to get her started.

When is this? I like to join. I've been going to Greg's thing at Top Gun for the past couple of months on and off, but when school starts, I can go on tuesdays anymore, but I'm open thursday and friday nights. And I'm very interested in learning stick fighting.

Stick AND knife most often go together, so you'll probably get both.

Don't overlook "Cane", (a personal favorite of mine). But few MA's teach it any longer. You'll have a blast regardless of which you choose. Anyone that has access to a free demonstration/seminar should take advantage of it.

Remember, a gun should be the last "layer" of your self defense plan.

Another benefit of attending such a class is to see how various weapons are used. This is "key" to understanding how to defend against them.

I guess I should stop now, as I have managed to take this thread way off subject. Sorry.

Also, in the PPH class it was mentioned that there might be a high intensity tactical class with lots of rounds fired. Is this still in the works?

Charles and I have been using Sunday afternoons, normally starting around 2:30, 3:00 PM. Between work schedules, other committments and daylight, that is what is workable for us.

You are always welcome with anything we do my friend! For those who don't know Eric, he makes it possible for Marc and I to do many of the things we are able to put on at PSC. He volunteers to be involved with every project we take on and was invaluable when we hosted the PSC Juniors Program on "IDPA day."
