Battle rifle???? Really?

I don't go around calling my ARs battle rifles, but maybe because of my brief time in the Marines I do think of them as battle rifles. TBH my custom built AR is much nicer then the M16 I was issued in Boot, only difference is not burst fire selection, which I think we were only allowed to shoot once during Boot anyways.

May I take a stab and say its not the term that bothers you, but probably more likely the type of people running around using it ?

The term from 1994 - 2004 was Semi-Automatic Assault Weapons with High Capacity Ammunition Feeding Devices...or as I prefer 'weapons of war' with 'banana clips'...

I completely understand the OP's finding some terms irritating. We all have pet peeves.

As a bona fide curmudgeon, I find an enormous amount of irritants make me want to shout from the mountain tops!

As an example: People employ words that need plurals or conversely add them where inappropriate. Arrrgggghhh!

Now, get off my lawn!

However, if you're in the fifth grade or lower, plastering emoticons on your posts and/or posting LOL on your posts is acceptable...

Don't know why the hub bub about the term "battle rifle." I don't think anyone on this forum is going to take any rifle they own into "battle," or assault anything. They are either defensive rifles, or sporting rifles, or target rifles, etc. You can call any rifle a battle rifle if it was, or will be, used in battle.

Example, the M1 Carbine was designed as a defensive rifle to replace the 1911 for rear echelon troops and crew served weapons personnel. But many front line troops were issued the Carbine, or picked up on the battlefield, especially the Marines. So a low powered, short range defensive weapon can be called a battle rifle because it was used in battle, and in many cases on the front lines. The attached cover photo of Larry Ruth's book "War Baby" (the definitive M1 Carbine book, recognized as such by most collectors) illustrates my point. The photo was taken on Iwo Jima, and if that's not battle I don't know what is.

The AR-15 is a civilian version of the M-16, but without the select fire capability, I don't believe it is or has been used in battle by any military. Could be wrong.

But, like Abraham, I consider my self a bona fide curmudgeon too, so whenever I hear civilians or companies use terms like "battle rifle" to describe their defensive rifles, or their "tactical gear" to describe their belts, pants, underwear, packs or bags, etc. the term "mall ninja" crosses my mind for some reason. I view the term "tactical" when used by companies the same way I view the meaningless term "Professional" on products. Just another way to sell product making it sound "better than that amateur stuff."

About the only "battle" in which my rifles have been engaged was with Mrs. Jusme over buying them in the first place. Does that count?

In that case I have a lot of other "battle" implements including "battle" fishing equipment, "battle" camping gear, "battle" beer mugs, "battle" clothes, etc..

When Battle Rifle is mentioned, the first thing that comes to my mind is 7.62 NATO, semiautomatic/select fire, with 20 round or more box magazine.

M14/M1A, FNFAL, BM-59, AR-10, HK-91/G3/CETME and the like are what I consider battle rifles.

If something hits the oscillating device, I guess my Marlin Model 60 .22LR could become a battle rifle.
