Question about carrying in others home

I've had my license for 5 or so years and never thought of this:

If I were talking to a neighbor or someone I just met in my or any other neighborhood while carrying concealed and was invited inside briefly, am I obligated to inform them that I am carrying a gun? Or, put another way, am I taking a legal risk if I do not mention it and they were to find out and opposed?

This isn't something that I feel would be an issue, but I found myself in that situation the other day when I was asked to drop off something at a mutual friends house and while inside (for all of 2 minutes) I was thinking that I had no idea if they would approve.

I carry, and I don't bother notifying anyone. But also, I don't generally ever enter strange homes, and most people who know me, know that I carry. If they give it any thought at all, they probably just assume that I am.

Concealed is concealed. Whether they approve of my gun is as relevant as whether they approve of my underwear.

The wife and I ran some errands the other day right after she got back from work. We left the house almost as soon as she got home. Later in the day, we came out from getting groceries and after loading the trunk, she asked me if I was carrying. I gave her this look:


To OP: I agree with everyone here. Don't ask/don't tell. If they just happen to ask you, then they ask you to leave, you have to just as you would with a business and a 30.06.

I thought the same thing but figured out lately most people are just clueless. My roommate knows I have my LTC yet always comes off extremely surprised when my shirt rides up. I've told him hundreds of times that I carry just about 24/7 but he still has no clue. Either I am great at concealing, he is ignorant, or both hahaha.

I've known plenty of people including family members who don't care for guns but through conversation they reluctantly agree that they like the idea of me being able to defend myself and family with a handgun if necessary. When in their homes I don't bother to tell them I carry and they've never told me not to. I've also invited them to go to the range with me when the opportunity presents itself.

I too have experienced a similar attitude from an extremely liberal guy I know.

He told me he'd NEVER carry a gun as he thinks to do so is immoral, but yeah, he'd reluctantly let me defend him or his family with my mine.

I have yet to decide if he's simply blathering obfuscation to cover his cowardice or just a weak minded jerk...

You reckon he could be both? Seriously, I leave my gun in the truck/car when visiting with people we know. I don't recall visiting with anybody who we don't know.

There are many people who have been brought up to belive that using a gun, even in self defense, is a sin. There is very little you can do to change their minds, and they will have to reach an eppifiny on their own.
I am like most who posted, if they don't know, and don't ask if you are carrying, or haven't given previous notice not to carry in their home, all is good. I liken it to meeting a stranger on the street, if I am CC it's none of their business that I'm carrying. JMHO

I agree with the DADT crew.

However, if asked (those who know me can assume I'm carrying) but someone who owned a home where I was compelled to be at ( ) I would indeed respect their wishes and disarm. I'd also probably never return, despite the protests of someone in particular.

I agree that not saying anything is the best bet here in Texas. When I visit my wife's cousins over in Arkansas they have a law that says the occupant of a private residence must give permission for carrying in a private home. I don't like having to leave the sidearm in my vehicle so I ask for permission.

I have a few neighbors and friends who know that I carry, and they trust me, whether they own their own guns or not. Most of the time, if I remove my coat to stay awhile, they don't even flinch or act funny, because they know me. I do have a friend with young grandchildren visiting at times, and I will remain concealed for the curious child's sake.

By the way, we're lucky in Texas, because when I lived and carried concealed in Arkansas, the law says that if you enter any private residence, you must immediately inform the resident that you are carrying a concealed handgun. It's the law. In Texas, you're not required to mention it, so I don't.
