327 Federal Magnum

Hello, and Merry Christmas everyone.

Does anyone carry or have any experience with the 327 mag in the Ruger LCR?

My wife got me an Academy gift card, and I've been thinking about getting a small revolver. The only carry weapons I currently have are all semi autos. The LCR 327 caught my eye because of my wife. She has really weak wrists and I've always been concerned that if she ever had to fire one of my 9's or 40's in a SD situation she would possibly limp wrist it and cause it to jam at the worst possible time. She doesn't carry, but we work together so we're together probably 99% of the time. I got her a 32 S&W Long years ago and its about the biggest caliber gun she can handle anymore, so that a primary reason that I've been looking at the LCR 327. It can also be loaded with 32 H&R and 32 Long for a softer load that I know she can handle.

I shot one and it no worse a Standard 38 special round.

Owned several revolvers in 327 mag (several sp101's, an LCR and a Taurus), and have been reloading for it as well as the 32 H&R and 32 Long for years. Great cartridge with a lot of potential. In the LCR the 327 can generate some substantial recoil. With Federal 327 mag 85 grn reduced recoil loads, it feels very similar to a 38 special load. Shooting 32 longs is not much more than shooting 22's. Nice thing with the LCR is you can run loads from gentle 32 longs to 130 grn loads that will compete with the reduced recoil 357 loads on the market. Really like the cartridge, but it's largest drawback is ammo choice.... unless you reload a 38/357 in this platform is more practical in ammo availability and cost.

A .38 like the LCR or a S&W 442 or a 642 Ladysmith (you get extra points for that one) would work fine.

There are a number of readily available low recoil loads out there. For folks who roll their own, wadcutters loaded with the hollow base forward have been a go to round for this purpose for many years.

My best suggestion is to pick up a few boxes of candidate low recoil rounds and rent the guns you're considering at the range so she can find a combination she'll be really comfortable with.

+1 on the S&W 642. They are a fine handgun.
P.S. If I didn't have my Colt Detective Special, I would carry that revolver.

Thanks for the replies. The 327 looks like a tough find, and to be honest after we looked and held several models this morning we've decided on the S&W 638. I guess I'm partial to the S&W, and I like the shrouded hammer that gives you the ability to fire in single action. As several of you said, 38 ammo is much more readily available, and we can keep it loaded with a low recoil SD round for her.
