large knives and batons?

anyone carry a knife longer than 5.5? or a collapsible baton? Ive seen those collapsible 12 inch baton at academy with a belt or pocket clip and curious if anyone carries those.

Those could fall under prohibited weapons, unless you are engaged in an activity such as hunting, camping etc. or are traveling to or from that activity, knives with blades longer than 5 inches are prohibited. Expandable batons ASP etc.. are considered clubs. Clubs are defined by either their design or their use, so even a baseball bat could be considered a club if used as such. While these things are legal to own and keep at your home, they would be considered illegal in public.

that's what I thought. I was somewhat confused because an older gentleman was telling me he carries a baton, and a 6 inch fixed blade along with his 1911. he mentioned a case of a man in Austin carrying an illegal blade into the capitol building, and being charged with prohibited weapons. he mentioned a non-applicability that's apparently in the P.C. somewhere, although ive looked and cannot seem to find it. I do remember the case, and not to sure on the outcome, if I remember though the charger were dropped. im just trying to clear it up for myself, and seeing if anyone else does this.

I've never been able to find any language to back it up, but I've heard before that somehow with an LTC a collapsible baton with your concealed carry could be permitted. Something along the lines of because it gives you a less than lethal option. Or that being the reasoning behind it. I would be curious to know if there is such a provision or argument that is 'reasonably' being made.

I think that the intent of the exclusion would pertain to handguns which also fall under prohibited weapons. Even so, the issue would have to be settled in court. You may beat the rap but you won't beat the ride. If my handgun is not "enough" protection I don't see having a large knife or baton as helpful.

Right... I'm not going to try to test it either, and I don't own a club, illegal knife or anything else prohibited. But it was my LTC instructor's understanding of the law, too.

The normal rule is 5.5" and single sharpened edge. Your own property, hunting, and sport have exceptions. Least that was my understanding. Also remember it isn't an illegal club, it is a tire thumper.

I remember when a lot of people had just bought a new handle for their ax and were "always" on their way home with it.

Yeah right up until you give someone an attitude adjustment with it. I had to carry an ASP when I was a LEO, maybe I'm just getting older, but just toting my handgun around all day is all the additional weight I need to carry.
