Besides all the broken glass. plastic, etc. you'll have to pick up, there are much better "reactive" targets. Someone smarter than I can advise if there are chemicals or other hazards contained within an old TV.

I know the old old Tvs are like shooting at a rock. The glass on them is probably at least 4 inches thick. But then again I'm not sure if you're just referring to an old tv as in a broken one laying around (but currently or recently manufactured) or like a 1970's tv

Bad idea, unless it's on your own land, and then still not a good idea.

I did it as a teenager with a BB gun (many, many moons ago). It will not explode/implode, but you get some interesting spalling in the front thick part. As I recall, the phosphorus just evaporated away. Cleanup could be a hassle, and probably all some hazardous illegal toxic waste issues these days.

My Mom just got rid of an old TV. She set it out with the garbage in Austin. She was informed that the tube needed to be disposed of properly due to internal gases. Funny, people had come and scavaged all but the tube.

None of the TVs I've seen since the mid-50's, and we used to collect them and take them apart for parts for radios, has anything like this.

The picture tube, and the other vacuum tubes implode with a "pop" when broken, whether by dropping, shooting etc. There were capacitors that might have been oil filled, perhaps with toxic fluids but these are rather small quantities.

We used to shoot at old appliances out in the desert, great fun but probably irresponsible.

Absolutely!! Nothing better or more satisfying than shooting an old Windows PC, a monitor or TV that failed just a few days after warranty!!

you might be right, but I watched a guy (I was younger and didn't know better) empty a clip of 9mm into a T.V. screen and none even close to penetrated the screen. Then I watched him pump a few rounds of 30-30 in it and still they didnt penetrate. I have no idea how thick they actually are but they must be pretty thick!!

Well, there's the problem. He used a clip. Next time he should get a magazine...... works a lot more better.

Sorry. I earned my living with my pen and keyboard, writing for highly educated people, and sometimes when I try to slip into the common patois, I mess it up.
