Locked Topics

From time to time, I see a topic that has been "LOCKED" without explanation. So, why was it locked? Inquiring minds....you know.

I once asked that same question. IIRC, the answer was that if a thread goes for some period of time without any activity it gets locked up. Might have been something like 2 or more weeks.
I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

Most of the time a thread is locked is pretty obvious to me - violation of forum rules.
These include personal attacks, LEO bashing, profanity, etc.
Under Firearm Sales - most are locked for violation of Rule 13.
I believe that an OP can request that his/her thread be locked.
I haven't seen too many threads locked only because they are old.
A moderator or Charles can correct me if I'm wrong.

I've also seen threads locked when they are a duplicate post (such as a news article), so that the dicussion only continues in the original thread.

:iagree: I forgot about that one. This may be the most common reason.

Even so, how much effort would it take to state the reason for the blockage?

Many do have the reason. Can you show me an example that does not?

That is the 'closed item' area. They are usually locked because the topic is no longer valid (bought one, sold one, etc.)

As for notification, as others said, it usually is a topic that is in violation and there should be no need to post why it was locked as there were probably warnings beforehand or it is obvious that the topic is in violation or nothing but a shoving match by members who refuse to follow the rules.
