phpBB has just released Version 3.0, Olympus. I will be doing some testing tonight and I may or may not be installing it tonight. It will all depend on the testing and how quickly or slowly I learn the new administrative procedures.

When I do make the changeover, whether tonight or later, there will be some down time for the Board. This is due to the way the database is converted from Ver. 2.0.22 to 3.0.0 and the recommendation that the "old" Board be deactivated during the conversion. I don't know how long this will take, but my guess is anywhere from several minutes to a few hours.

Although I don't anticipate any major problems, if anything causes extended downtime on the forum, I'll post a notice on TexasShooting.com and in the Site Announcements section of TexasIDPA.com in the forum section.

I think most folks are going to like the new feature in Olympus; I just hope the conversion goes smoothly!

Wait a minute! You're the tutor!! I think I'm going to start with the forum on TexasIDPA.com. The database is much smaller and there's far less to lose!

same here, I use phpbb as well, and did not know this was available. I will be watching for your success.

I have one forum running phpBB, and I've always wished I'd used SMF instead. I've held off on running v.3 beta, although one forum I frequent has been running it. I don't care for the skin he uses; I hope the standard 3.0 look is better.

I have used SMF. I switched to phpBB. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

And yes, as a DBA. BACKUP! I will be doing that tomorrow night / saturday morning for a migration from a "managed server" location to a self managed co-lo site. I can't wait.

RSS allows one to speed read using a 3rd party program. One of the disadvantages of a forum like this is that it is kinda slow to navigate. One could use the same RSS reader and check out several forums blogs or news feeds from the same program. much like a news reader. One advantage is that once its read you can keep postings after the moderators decide to censor it.

There were discussions here that have had whole threads killed. Readers had missed the threads. If they had been downloading the threads with their RSS feeds they would still be able to read the old postings.

The another neat feature of RSS is for folks with dial-up. They can get on and download everything they want to read directly, without searching through pages.
Then go offline to read, and do not necessarily have to read everything at once. Which would lose your place if you were on line using the search updater "new messages since your last visit".

That sounds like my pre-web days with Compuserve back in the '80's.

Visit a site and get a list of topics, review them offline and mark the ones of interest, go back online and download the marked ones, then compose your responses offline, and go back online to transmit your replies.
