New OC Training Clarification

#1

Post by Daniel Watson »

I was at the Conference earlier this week, THANK YOU Mr. Cotton, great information. I had a question I'm hoping someone can clarify. As I'm reading through the forum(s) and asking a few other instructors I know, I'm finding a little bit of a difference in understanding the new training requirements regarding the Open Carry Law(s). Primarily, the requirement to teach "Retention", is this "Retention Techniques" or "Types/Styles of Retention Holsters"? And then I know there's a second requirement to teach but my notes have a blank space there :???: Any help on clarifying the new requirements is greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

I was at the conference too - with similar questions/concerns since the law passed. But, I suspect we may just have to wait and see what is in the video and guidelines coming from DPS. Hopefully, sooner rather than later.

DPS is creating a video on retention. We will have to certify that we have watched said video. I understand that we can play the video for our classes, which will solve those questions/problems. :)

A video ought to do the trick. I hope it is in lieu of trekking to Georgetown for our instructor renewals.

Any word on whether they plan to revise the student written exam?

They will be creating a new course outline, test, answer sheet, revised CHL-100 and CHL-8. You will have to read them and certify you have (plus watch the retention video). These should be available by 9/1 (some provisions go into effect then). We can start using the new outline, test, etc as soon as they are available but we have to use them by 1/1.

We will NOT have to attend DPS renewal classes, NOT have to take a test and NOT have to show proficiency w/each other. :)

I'm waiting for Cotton's thread for clarification on the recent gun laws that were passed.
