What about schools? Every school I've entered the last few years scans your DL to verify you aren't a sex offender. The device they use runs the check and prints a visitors badge. Unless I missed it, I didn't see an exemption for schools.

I could be wrong but I thought schools did an optical scan of the front and used OCR software to get the information.

Could be. Never paid that close attention. Just assumed they swiped it.

I would think that "electronically readable information" would include any information that was read by electronics, whether it be by optical scan or mag-stripe swipe. But a test case is needed -- volunteers?

Is it possible to use an inexpensive card reader to get the info? Yes. Is it legal? Presumably, no. What difference does it make if somebody, or many bodies is doing it?

Seems silly to leave information in plaintext and unguarded and say it's illegal to read it.
