I haven't had a LEO in my class before. I thought they were exempt from the proficiency. One signed up recently, so I called Austin to verify that, and was told they were exempt from all of the class. Fine. I contacted the LEO, and was told that he was only allowed to carry his duty weapon concealed off duty, and by getting the CHL, he could carry anything.

Is he misunderstanding something, or should I let him take the class like a civilian? It almost sounds like a dept policy issue.

If he still wants to take the class what's the harm in treating him like any other paying customer?

Actually they dont have too (FBI, B.P. City County LE) but their chief must sign off on a letter to dps
I have done a fewof some of the above because some agency chiefs want them to carry duty firearm off duty some are to large to conceal on a skinny city cop but there are lots of FAT ones here in the Valle. some could Carry A deseert Eagle.. Maybe they dont want the chiefs knowing everthing about them.

That is not the law, but very could be his departments policy.

This is what I was thinking. What department does he work for?

I have had many LEO's take the Texas CHL class. It's less trouble when carrying out of state to show a CHL license. Once you retire from a department with a CHL you are not required to qualify with your department every year in order to carry. Department policy may have restrictions for off duty carry. Some may want to know what we're teaching and a view of the laws from a civilian viewpoint. A little research and you will find many members of this forum are active, retired, or former LEO's.

Allen PD. He told his wife he could only carry his duty weapon concealed, and wants to be able to carry anything. I'm thinking it is a dept policy.

I would welcome him to the class and look forward to hearing his perspective. He can deal with his department and its requirements as he sees fit.

I have also heard that some LEOs want a CHL so if they get spotted in carrying a gun in plain clothes they won't have to disclose that they are a LEO and potentailly expose themselves if they are doing undercover work.

Makes sense to me, a non-CHL instructor, non-LEO.

He should be able to exempt the whole process and pay $25 and send a letter to get one. That's what I do.

Nothing wrong with a cop taking the class, but they should have an exemption that lets them get a CHL without having to take the class.

No way Jose. EVERYONE should have the same standard. I've seen enough of this "rules for thee but not me" thank you very much.

Really?

They do have an exemption and they should have the exemption. They have at least had five to six months of training thus they have more than exceeded the little four hour CHL class. They quality twice a year at minimum and CHL's qualify one time.

So I guess according to you we all need a five month long academy to get our CHL's.
